I have been tasked with repairing a lot of stainless steel sinks. I have never welded stainless before and am curious if my welding machine would be a good choice and any advice to wire/gas/techniques to help me get started. I plan on buying some SS material the same thickness to practice on first, but I would like to keep the wasted time and expendables to a minimum. Thanks alot
Reply:308 SI, Argon or He/Ar mix. Spray with .035 and travel. JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases. There all here. :
Reply:I would be hesitant to mig weld on sinks, depending what the repair is.You will find that it will warp very easily. Most sinks I have welded on have not been thicker than 15 ga. I dont know how you can get into spray transfer on sheet that thin. If you try, use lots of tacks and short welds. Keep it cool, take your time, maybe use some heat sink paste.BTS Welding
Reply:All I can say is that it is done in our area, all the time, in kitchin Mfg. Co's with no problem. John SMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases. There all here. :
Reply:I will pick up that wire and gas tomorrow to try it, thanks for the input.
Reply:I did what you said and I managed to get the cracks repaired. It wasnt real pretty, but after grinding there were no voids. Thanks for the tip!

Reply:SS warps BAD... i mean REALLY BAD!!!! clamp it or keep your heat low. all the MIG'ing at work is done with MM251's and 304/304L/316/316L SS. looks great after it's passivated and/or pickled. the main problem they run into is warpage. other than that, i have no idea about wire size, type, or gas. i do know that the wire speed is susually around 320-340 (mainly about 331 is what the display says every day) and the voltage is always between 21.4 and 21.7. we usually weld 10 ga and 1/4" we also run 3/8" and 1/2" plate all the way down to 22 ga, but the vast majority is 10ga.good luckLater,Andy |
