fabricting new crossmember for bucket. Attached Images
Reply:I'm curious, why the reinforcement in the bucket itself? With those shovel teeth, I'd guess he digs in clay or dirt mostly. With that new reinforcement in the bucket, I can see it packing with mud/clay up there unless you plated the top of the bucket to make a smooth "floor" up there. If he's doing primarily demo work, I can see hanging up in that bucket reinforcement and causing issues. I can understand the work on the grapple..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:DSW, take a closer look at the pic.I believe you are looking at a "clamshell" bucket that opens and closes. Personally, I'm not sure why you would really want one, but I'm pretty sure that's what it is.
Reply:DSW, the reinforcement is actually welded to the moveable  "jaw" or "clam" of the bucket; the bucket doesn't use a separate grapple. Sometimes this design is called a 4in1 bucket.Nice rebuild RWS, thanks for the post and pictures. Were you able to save and reuse the original ears?Oops - I cross-posted with DaddyLast edited by denrep; 08-28-2009 at 10:57 PM.
Reply:The only use I've really seen for a clamshell bucket is dredge work. I still wonder about stuff getting caught behind the brace. With a clam shell bucket I see even less reason for that reinforcing. Most of your loads would be on the sides as its dropped, or the hinge as its closed. I'm curious to find out what this is used for and the thoughts behind it..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Aside from exactly what this bucket is designed for, I feel a bucket can never be too well built or reinforced.
Reply:The cross-tube is the anchor point for the ears, which have to take all of the open and close force.Sometimes a bucket like this is used to pinch and move rocks or debris, so there can be a lot of less-than square and equal forces on the clam.Good Luck
Reply:Not much difference in shape between the replacement and the original except the new one appears simpler, cleaner in design. Nice smooth beads.  Looks like the original either rotted away, was pulled out or a combo of both.
Reply:Ok, Now I think I'm seeing it.  I haven't seen one like that for an excavator / backhoe only loader buckets. When you said 4 in 1, it started to make sense. I was looking at it as 2 different buckets / parts, as opposed to one assembled unit..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
