Reply:Back in school doing tig, I used to stick the tungsten in a hand drill, drill on and pointing up at an angle, and sharpen it on a pedestal grinder.
Reply:Sharpen it in-line with it's axis, NOT around the axis of the tungsten. Typically for steel and SS, gas can be around 11 cfh to 13cfh+. Any morethan that is a waste IMO...unless working outside.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:I have tried many different way of sharpening the tungsten and I ended up using a spare belt sander with an 80 grit belt (just for tungsten) and I put the tungsten in a drill and have at it. The belt sharpens it in about 5 seconds to a nice point and the arc is great!I did not like the grinder because it was not a true flat surface and the tungsten was eating the stone up and it takes longer than the belt. I just point the tungsten down in line with the belt and go.I used to think you needed a tungsten sharpener or some special diamond wheel for a grinder, but then I remember this guy that used a hand held grinder and his welds on steel were incredible, so I knew there was an easier and less expensive way that a tungsten sharpener. After a few weeks of practice, my welds are turning our very nice even on aluminum.Just my .02 cents.Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com! |
