I saw this on ebay and although it is simple and most anyone could put it together I personally feel it wouldn't work, am I wrong. Guy ganged what looks like a rolair pump to the flywheel of a Ranger 8. I'm pretty sure you can't weld and pump air at the same time and I also believe the welder plus the load of the pump would keep you from getting proper amperage. If not I would love to put one of these together but maybe someone else knows more than I. The compressors can use and unloader so once up to pressure it would not work as hard but when the unloader dumps I would think it falls on it's face.  Add says come try it but unfortunately it is very far away, but it aroused my curiosity.  left it big so it's easy to see. Reply:Hello Duane,  I agree looks like some thought was put into it, but is it functional or did someone just put it together for a quick sale. will the Onan 16 handle this job?    Buy it now price , $2750.00   kind of steep, but maybe not.   Might also be a good idea?Last edited by kolot; 11-21-2011 at 05:25 PM."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:I doubt that the engine is strong enough to support the compressor and the welder at the same time. If you want to let the compressor build up and then turn it off and use the welder, or use them one at a time, I think you would be OK. Also, I do not understand your thoughts on the compressor unloader. The unloader releases pressure on the compressor head so that it is easier to restart after it builds up pressure and shuts off automatically. .

Reply:A proper unloader would allow the welder to run at full output alright. However I don't see any provisions for proper unloaders on that compressor head. It does look like it might have a "Load Genie" type unloader which will help if tripped but the compressor is still pumping all the time and blowing out of the load genie. This is noisy and will use some power no matter what.   As for the engine well I can see it working at lower amperage or low electrical draw from the welder but it could hurt it at full out. I know my welder loads the engine pretty well when I'm running full out. However there's not that many out there who regularly run 5/32 7018 off a welder this size.  I've considered similar for my welder in the future if I ever get around to it. However I plan on using a compressor with a electric clutch so I can completely remove the compressor load when welding full out.  I'm not sure I like the battery hanging that low to the ground. I know it would get knocked around some of the places I go.  I'm also curious how he's mounted the tank to the trailer. It looks like he's just welded it down from what I can see. I know I've seen more than one tank crack when mounted rigidly by it's feet to a trailer.Last edited by irish fixit; 11-21-2011 at 06:40 PM.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:You read me right Duane,   And it sounds that many are skeptical as am I, although the electric clutch could make it work if it were set up right."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400

Reply:Not really a new concept.  I ran across this product on the Douglass Truck Bodies site a few years ago.  I just looked now and do not see it.  Oh well, pictures will have to do: Attached ImagesLater,Jason

Reply:Coming from the small engine side of things, I would say that it would be under powered. It takes alot of tourqe to turn that big armiture on one end, with out some type of way to disconect the compressor its will be hard on the starter and batt. Seeing the cost of onan parts, Id be sure it has the disconect on it. In collecting the small garden tractors on certian hydro models theres a disconect on the pump for cold weather. These units are powered with 17 hp gas and 3 cylinder diesel engs. Now coming from the welding side of things I really cant say cause Im learning. But from what I saw the guys do at the Cat dealer I used to work at, that carbon arc thing, you would need a bigger eng on it. The load on the eng while welding, going from what I hear on my Kohler in my ranger 8, to what I heard in the shop, Id say you would be under powered. Hey but what do I know, Im just here learning from all of you guys!Learning one rod at a time
Reply:I thought three things.1. Needs an electric clutch.2. Nice concept, I have a similiar idea but mine has 2 engines.3. Is $2750 a fair price for the Welder only?
Reply:To weld on thin plate using small electrodes might work.....but on lincon's without the capasitor like Miller is using any time you change rpm's you effect the amp output which then effects the arc. On my SA-200 it only has a DC 110 plug and it will screw up your settings if you grind and weld at the same time. The RPM on my 1954 SA-200 is 1300....while on the newer SA-200's say 1960- up is 1800 rpm if you look at the amp dials they are differant even with the newer units that run 2000+ to have AC power....the arc is differant......hence the reason some are paying $12,000.00 for a DC only SA-200D...to get back to that smooth arc. I say it wont work the way he has it set up......A young green pipe welder asked an old salt one day...How can I make the weld on the bottom of the pipe look like the top.......The old salt replied....Screw up the top......
