When I took an evening welding class recently the school provided each of us with a welding cape / sleeves.  No choice in size there - they were all too large for most.  It seemed handy and since Christmas is coming, I thought I'd add that to the list.  I'm looking at the economy Revco / Black Stallion brand of leather cape and sleeves with a bib 214CS-E.  The official sizing information is Small=36-38" chest and Medium=40-42' chest.   I'll be mostly doing indoor tig welding with the cape over a shirt.  Nominally, I'd take a small although in normal men's clothing I don't.  This plus the fact that the vendors stock lots of large and extra large sizes and very little of the smaller sizes suggests that either these items run a little small or people normally buy a size larger for some reason.  What's your experience on buying leather capes / sleeves with regard to size or anything else I need to look out for.  I have a choice of a 14" or 20" bib with it and I think I'll go with the longer one.
Reply:If your only doing tig I wouldn't get the cape, a long sleeve cotton shirt works fine and isn't so hot and heavy.
Reply:I do occasionally do stick welding with the Syncrowave.  It's just inside the cellar door, so I run the leads outside where the sparks and fumes from stick welding are less problematic.  I'd wear the cape / sleeves for that as well, unless it's winter, in which case I've never had a problem just welding in whatever old coat I have on.  The cape just seemed like an easy thing to throw on quickly in the shop, particularly in summer when I'm normally wearing a short sleeve shirt.
Reply:Miller makes a good pair of Endura cotten/pigskin sleeves.  Comfortable and not too pricy, about 29 bucks @ Ciberweld if memory serves me.  Bob
Reply:Sizing for welding gear seems to fit me about the same as anything else. I wear a size small usually (I'm about 5' 8", 140 lbs). Miller's small full leather & combination jackets fit me well, with a nice trim fit that I like, I hate baggy clothing. Revco fits me well too, but Tillman gear seems to fit quite a bit looser though. The sizing for all this stuff doesn't seem to run small.Give me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire.
