This is one of the first jobs I did when I started my business in '05. It was 2700' of pipe and cable. There are some bad spots in the toprail where I was still learning the tricks of running toprail. I just figured I would post these even though they are old. Attached Images
Reply:Oh man, that's an awesome Fence !Do you know roughly what each section between pillars would cost for materials ?  Would each section of fence be around 50' in length ?  Was curious about the build of the pillars also.  Concrete based ? or perhaps simple Brick and Mortar ?I was thinking about doing something similar for a friend of mine who has a small acreage with Ducks and Goats and stuff....Could you use this as an outside perimeter to enclose Horses ?Cheers,/Jman...
Reply:Bryan,I really like the design. I'm wondering how the cables are run; do they go through the centers of the vertical posts? Are there smaller tubes letting the cable through, or does the cable run straight through ?If so, has there been any corrosion issues?
Reply:Jman - The fence is continuous. The rock was added later on. It was the wrong way to do it, but they never told me about wanting rock around the fence. The right way would be to build the rock columns then build the fence between them. The problem with the way it is done now is the cable rusts right as it enters the rock and the fence moves with temperature through the year so it could break the columns. I did not do the rock, but it has a concrete base.Maarty - The cable is held on with cable clips. 1/4 on the line posts and 1/2 on the corner posts. Like in the photo below Attached Images
Reply:Not sure about temperature extremes,,,,   in a previous life, I used to build, or direct the building, of pipe fence myself.   I would make it a point, of putting in an expansion joint, every rail , normally every hundred feet or so.   Just going back and looking afterwards, from low's in the mid-twentys, to high's in the 110-120 degree range,,,,   movement was something like three inches or so.
Reply:Another hint.   If running either sucker rod, or cable, as intermediate rails, DON'T try welding either direct.    Slip on 2" pieces of pipe, the right size, weld THOSE on, let the cable or sucker free float in between.    And no, don't use spings as  the attachment points, will just saw back and forth.  Samm,,,,    ever hear the names  Sparrowk, Englhardt, Duane Martin??????Last edited by mark8310; 08-31-2009 at 05:06 PM.

Reply:Interesting postI never thought about it, never having done it, but how does one keep the top rail in parallel with the ground contour without looking funky?I've seen a lot of barbed wire, and they usually put a pull post at the top of a long hill, and in the hollow between hills.I just never paid it any mind"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Then there's the question of plumb vs. perpindicular to the actual terrain.I don't do fences.  As a matter of fact I got a guy coming in this week to build some fence, be interesting to actually take the time and talk about it.Pic..........  Top line is the arrangement I've seen on pull posts.  Second line is the perpindicular to the terrain style, and bottom line is the plumb style. Reply:We always did plumb style on the fences we had on the farm.  Dad & I build about 3 miles one summer after he bought another farm, then tore down the old buildings/farmhouse that fall.We had about 15 miles, all told, of fences that we had to maintain year after year.  When I went into the Air Force, dad started using electric fences & removed a lot of the barbed wire fencing.  Some of those fences had been in place over 100 years..........used concrete fence posts dad's uncle patented & made a fortune on.Was going to add, the top of the hill we used a larger butt fence post we could pull against.  Only time we used a "pull point" was when the line went about a mile.  Anything less than 1/2 mile we just stretched it.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
