Needed to get my steel organized and with the price of this stuff these days it's worth gold, especially the steel with the red ends, it's free machining 12L14.  The Blue storage rack is new.  The wall mounted method is something I have been using for years.  Loaded up ready to go.Wall mount short and long pieces.OK, this is a welding forum, so I have to throw in a welding shot, here's the blue rack under construction.
Reply:Sweet clamp!! I seen one of them before, it was pricey!! Looks like it's working well in the real world and might be worth the plunge!Miller 252Miller 250Miller Syncrowave 250Esab Plasma Powercut 1250HF Basic oxy/act torches

Reply:In the event you want more details on the 3-axis clamp:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=28454It is a bit pricey, but if you do a lot of stands or three axis welding and your time is worth anything, then......

Reply:Yes, I have sought out professional counsel for this Organizational Disease, just when I think I am cured I pass by a Container Store, or the Snap On Truck and it's like sending a crackhead into a crack house for a free all you can use day.  Now this is truly anal retentive, for which I am really guilty:
Reply:May br AR but you sure can tell if something is missing.Gotta ask - how did you get those form fit drawer liners to match your tools?Or did you buy tools to fit the liners?A butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug

Reply:These are called French Fitted Drawers and they are very easy to make (don't ask me why they are called that, don't have a clue).  Step 1 grab up the tools, set them the way you want and trace a pattern on a piece of either MDF or plywood, I used 1/2" MDF.  Step two drill the holes for your fingers to grab the tools and for the saw blade to enter, these happen to be about 1" in dia.  Step 3 using either a scroll saw or a jig saw cut out the shape of the tool.  Step 3A seal the wood so the glue sticks a sanding sealer from Home Depot works well.  Step 3B glue on a bottom this can be as little as 1/8" masonite which is what I used. Step 4 prepare for flocking (yes I swear that is what it is called) you buy the glue in the same color as the fibers you want to put on, brush this stuff on then using a tool (cardboard tube with holes in one end) you cover the glue with the fibers and mean pour this stuff on, the excess is recovered and used  again.  Step 5 let it dry for a couple of days then call up your buddies to come over and see this modern masterpiece.  Sorry I only have a couple of photos, but go here to learn more. http://www.donjer.com/index.htmThis is really a lot easier than it looks, so much so a toothless hillbilly could do it.  You could knock these out in a couple of evenings, while you are hiding from the wife.
Reply:I've done that for some returning injured soldiers.  I mounted their medals to it without the finger holes & covered it with glass. And your right, a toothless hillbilly named Bubba could do it.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:The tool storage is is is is ...........I can't even say it  It's too beautiful for words!!!!!You have much nicer measuring instruments than I do.Only things I keep organized to some extent are my cutters.  I'd like to keep 'em in the little plastic boxes they come in, but the boxes take up too much room.  My space is pretty much at a premium. Reply:did'nt think about between the studs for storage I like the idea. I'm def going to use it. thanks It's not what you can buy, it's what you can build that matters
Reply:Very nice.I looked at the site for the flocking.  How much did you use per insert or how many can you do per pound?
Reply:Are there any safety issues when welding 12L14 steel? I love this stuff for machining but is the lead content a problem when welding it? Thamks, Zotdoc.
Reply:Wow Man,Those racks are 'SWEET'.  I like the Idea of making them out of Wood when putting them against a lighter load bearing wall like that....  Less weight and more metal can be stored in those shelves.  I'm getting tired of digging Scrap outta bins so this example of yours should certainly assist with my issue.....Cheers,/Jman...
Reply:Your steel racks, tool chest, and clamp look great.  I know this is an older thread but it's the first time I've seen it.  I really like organization although money and space are kinda making it hard right now.  I worked at a paper mill and was in charge of the 5S program and went threw each machine and found a place for everything.  Learned a lot and try to apply it in the garage but I've gotten some new tools and not enough space to organize them like I would like to.Man, those are nice racks, for both the tools and the steel.  Hey, busa, you're only up there in Phoenix - I might hafta drop in sometime and have you weld up a couple of racks for me or something. And that corner clamp is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeetttt ........
Reply:SpyGuy--you bet swing on by always interested in swapping shop stories.  It's getting to be a cooler temperature than the surface of the sun these days. Zotdoc--I can't speak with authority about the weldability of 12L14, but based on what I have read, it's probably not the preferred steel to use for welding applications.  In terms of health effects, my guess is that because the lead and sulfur content are so low the reality of this verses other steels is probably negligible.  If you are interested I just scored a great deal on some 4140 on eBay.  Here's the fellow selling cut offs:http://business.shop.ebay.com/Manufa...=p3911.c0.m282 Ponch37300--I bet after you got the program organized the production went up.  I find it saves a of time and keeps edges on tools and cutters from getting damaged.  I have a buddy who is just the opposite and when helping him with his Government jobs in his shop we spend more than half our time moving junk just to work and trying to find tools.  He has better equipment than me but its all junked up and for the most part unusable.
Reply:The cost savings of being organized is huge.  Plus it's nice to walk into a clean shop and know where things are.  My problem right now is I have gotten some good deals on new tools and don't really have room for them!  So if I have a big project I need to drag some out of the garage just to gain some space, but it's nice to have the tools when you need them.  I like seeing others organization to get ideas for my own garage.

Reply:Fredf--the glue up method would definitely work for straight stuff and it would be cleaner lines.  Once that flock covers stuff up you can really make a hack job look good.  A tip--pile on the flock to the point you think you have over done it by a factor of five.  Let it dry, turn it up side down, and recycle the rest to use again. It's cool stuff.  You will find it dirt simple to use.
