Yikes.....,I have a 'Smoky' issue with some 1/8th Inch Aluminum Diamond Plate !  I have a LOT of this stuff and wanted to practice some TIG welding with a bunch of pieces (was planning on making a simple box with six pieces).  I prepped the Aluminum with a Stainless Steel Brush and then cleaned with Acetone.  I had a problem getting an arc started, which I thought was kinda weird... and when I did get one going, there was all kinds of white smoke with Whitish / Yellow Residue left on the Aluminum.I then took a RotoZip and a Sanding disk and gave it a good once over and then used another Stainless brush and Acetone to finish.  I was then able to get an Arc started with no issue whatsoever, but still more Smoke and Residue...What in the Hell is this stuff ?  (It's very reminiscent of Galvanized Sheet and the Burning Zinc !)I have now stripped off about 2 inches of this stuff (from the edge) and yet it remains...  Is there  a 'Better way' to get this coating of crap off ?  If I have to clean it with anything heavier such as a 'flap disc', then it will cease to be Diamond Plate, which kinda' defeats the purpose...(And for those who are wondering, Yes I'm ventilating like a madman and using a respirator when 'attempting' to weld this Aluminum.)Cheers,/Jman...
Reply:(AWWW CRAP !Sorry Folks, I meant to put this in the CORRECT area of the FORUM.(perhaps a moderator could move it ?)Thanks,/Jman..
Reply:May be stupid questions, but is your gas on? Is it pure Argon? Are you running AC? What tungsten are you using? Also any welding settings would be easier to diagnose. Not intending any "Egg sucking" lessons.Cheers, RyanOnly two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. - Albert Einstein
Reply:Sounds like there's some kind of coating on the aluminum.  Grab a sandpaper flap wheel and put it on your angle grinder and grind both sides and the edge of the aluminum in the  areas you want weld.  That usually cleans up anything that's on the surface.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:It sure sounds like it. Please keep us posted with how you get on and what you find out.I'd be interested to know what sort of coating it could be.Cheers, Ryan Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. - Albert Einstein

Reply:Some "aluminum diamond plate" is actually die cast zinc, chrome plated.  Used on license plate frames, etc.Could be what you have.  Won't tig weld worth a crap.

Reply:i have seen some polished aluminum that has clear powder coating on them. this is to keep having to re polish it all the time. it is tough to know unless you purchased it from a place that has the exact specs on it.syncrowave 180 sd
Reply:Where did this plate come from?Have we all gone mad?
Reply:A lot of Aluminum treadplate has a heavy duty coating because it typically sees a very rough life. Tread plate is made for flooring and therefore gets beat on everyday. The sandpaper flapwheel will get the coating off and then use a NEW and clean SS brush, then acetone afterwards. This outta take care of it.Granthttp://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything
Reply:Sounds like powder coat, welded a broken plate tang on a crotch rocket swing arm today, looked like al was coated. Ground coating w/sanding pad-welded good.Peter
Reply:Great advice here...  I picked up all this Diamond Plate at the Metal Yard.  The stuff was less than .50 / lb so the price was great.  I can easily sell it or bring it back if needed so I'm not too worried about it.  I'll probably keep some of it for cold connecting and odds and ends even if I can't weld it.Anyway, here's a picture of some of the plate.  It is indeed very 'polished looking' so paweldor may be on to something...  I'm going to try the 'Flap Disc' trick and see what that does.....  This time I'll be stripping the Entire surface of the 8" pieces...Cheers,/Jman...
