Reply:Shoot metal with a gun is bad news, ain't it?  I think those metal swinging targets are for bow and arrow.

Reply:Lead dust from bullets hitting the targets is bad.  Fragments could be a problem also if you are to close.I have seen some one with two helium balloons tied to a remote control car.  The game is to shoot one and leave the other untouched. You could hang something like a bowling pin from string or bungey cord. Not much welding involved..Eric
Reply:if metal target were a bad idea they wouldn't have them set up at ranges all across the world just keep a safe distance mabe no closer than 40yds
Reply:Metal targets are the standard in almost all professional shooting competitions throughout the world.do a google search, there are countless variations of "reactive" metal targets.I would add that shooting metal with a bow sounds bad .. for the arrow anyway.
Reply:For firearms: Spinner target (basically a steel plate which is setup to spin around a horizontal bar when shot), knockdown targets, silouette plates, etc... are actually very common.  Designs are easy enough to come up with, just look at the commercially available ones and pick a design you like, they're pretty simple.  What I wouldn't do is a heavy piece of stationary plate steel, or shooting silouette plates at close range (unless they act like knockdown plates or something similar). For archery:  I wouldn't recommend shooting steel plates with a bow (bad for the arrows...I definitely wouldn't shoot my carbon shafts into one anyways), stick to either foam commercial bales or hay bales.Hope that helps you out.  Should be a good fun project --WintermutePS.I am very very carefully avoiding responding to some of the initial responses to this question...basically, I don't have anything polite to say, so I'll say nothing at all there."No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:I think that people say to avoid them because it takes care to set them up safely.http://www.policeone.com/police-prod...afety-and-use/

Reply:Hay bales, particle board, or even old phonebooks for the bow and arrow crew.   Also the commercial targets.Spinner targets as previously mentioned are good for .22's and muzzleloaders.  Angling the plates towards the ground a little will help deflect bullets into the ground.  For the hanger rods, be careful to present as slim a profile as possible - having one of those bullets ricocheting back at the kids would NOT be fun! Oh, additional targets: if any of the parents are being complete pains in the posterior, tell them they can park their cars down at the other end of the field ....    Last edited by SpyGuy; 09-23-2009 at 01:19 AM.
