I was shown how to weld right before christmas for about an hour and a half. I had a great time and got the bug.... The guy that took me to his shop and taught me to weld loaned me his millermatic 210 and a tank of gas as he wasn't using it at the time. I've been welding anything i can get my hands on that will make sparks or melt  I tore up my garage floor unfortunately and decided I needed a welding table. I had no idea the price of metal and was shocked. I gave a local metal recyclers place a call and i got my table for 1/3 of the price!!!!! I'm sooo stoked!!! The only problem was it came with brackets and other things I didnt need on the metal so I hit it with a cut off wheel. Once I saw that the cut off wheel wasn't working real well and there was some welds I just couldnt get to I decided on taking another route... Plasma cutter, way out of budget someone recommended and oxy/ace set and to rent some bottles... WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I LOVE THIS THING!! I don't want to take it back!!  Well, on to my pictures so you can tell me if these are cold welds, I think I'm on the fence about it. I'm kinda thinking i needed more heat. Any thoughts from the resident experts???
Reply:In the last pic where the bolts are is where i mounted my vice, I want it to be easy to take on and off. I tried drilling the 1/4"+ top with a few drill bits and broke them all... LOLI grabbed that torch tip and turned on the gas, 5 minutes and four holes! I took some big washers and welded them to the table top so the bolts will go through all lined up. I hate that they're not flush. I'm now thinking of opening the holes up a bit, lining up the bolts w/ the vice pattern holes and welding the nuts flush in the holes on the inside of the table. Please guys/girls be honest what you think, I know they don't look the best but I really want to know what you all think.- Jason
Reply:My Dad never taught me how to weld, so I taught myself.  I became hooked.  I read books.   I talked to old welder guys with funny little hats on their heads.  A guy told me the fine art of temperature and how to judge penetration.I just learned to weld.  Simple as that.  Sounds like you may have that bug too.  Molten metal is beautiful.   Yeah, I know.
Reply:Since you have not had any formal training treat your oxy-actylene rig like a bomb,  because if you do not take care of it, it can kill other people too.Always bleed your regulators after use.Never get ANY petroleum product near the oxygen. NEVER clean regulators with any petroleum product.I have seen many accidents personally over the years. Every year there is probably 10 accidents in the SF bay area with oxy-actylene rigs. But they are very useful to bend and heat and cut meal at a low cost.

Reply:Now I'm all scared and ready to put the bottle outside, but I don't want them frozen/stolen
Reply:You can leave your tanks in the garage that is safe. Just colse the valves snug and install the caps. They are dangerouse but not something a little comon sense wont cure. Reply:This isnt really critiqing the "welds" but I really think that you shouldv'e knocked the slag off before putting the bolts in. you also could have scraped some of those big, heavy dingle berrys off pretty easily.
Reply:Thanks for the help Mark, Actually they're just finger tight. They're only on there because I was lining up my vice and figured I'd take some pictures to show you guys. I Am going to take some square tubing and mount my vice with a slip of square and slide it on and off rather than bolts. Now I just have to fill those holes...grrr...This is why you must plan your projects rather than just take it as you go... LMAO
Reply:I dont know that you have to fill em in, just clean and use good washers you will be alright.Fortunately for you, there is a good love for the oxy-acet there. More practice and you will amaze yourself. Just remember that the "perfect" cut can always be achieved with the proper torch settings and a steady hand.
Reply:Keep your travel speed constant as you seem to speed up at the end, it's very slight but it is there. Slightly smaller weld becuase you've went faster, yes it's petty but hey.Control your breathing too.Good stuff mate * Thumbs Up*Metaltrades.co.uk
Reply:Looks good for just starting out .. I would slow down the movement a little bit.. Other than that it looks good..
Reply:wait till he finds out how to spray weld HEHELife is tuff,so be sharp  lincoln sp 100  cutmaster101  miller bobcat  miller 250 mig  $thousands in snapon
Reply:In the very first pic, the middle part of the weld is a great burn, no undercut, minimal bb's. If u have alot of bb's, ur either to cold, or ur wire speed is to fast. I also think ur weaving ur weld to much, slow down, where ur just learning how to weld, just practice pushing the puddle, and keeping ur welds even throughout the weld. (like anything else, u can style it later)! Also, always tie in ur corners of ur welds, i noticed in one of the pics, ur corner wasn't tied in, but that will  come with more time and practice!I don't know how much actual experience u have, n im not trying to know it all, i just like to pass along lil pointers to help begginers out. Because, i had so much help when i was learning, i just like to pass it on!!!One last lil pointers, do not wear contacts while mig welding. The arc rays are thirteen times stronger than a suns ray, and can melt the contact to ur eye if u catch a flash just right. And when i was migging i would use a thirteen lens, and eleven when i stick. I worked around some guys from new mexico on a job, and they would use a nine lens while wire welding, let me tell u, these guys had vision problems, like u wouldn't believe!!! A nine allows u to see the puddle rather well, but i don't recommend it.Well, hope i could help a lil!
