Acetylene Ash

Just a quick question - it may sound really stupid...Was firing up the oxy-fuel rig today and noticed ash like particulate floating down directly after getting the acetylene lit - had not introduced oxygen to the flame yet. It happens every time I light the torch rig - does anyone have an explanation for this. Acy. Reply:That will happen all the time , its just carbon.Burn off of the gas.It goes away once you turn on oxygen.

Reply:My high school thecher told us to crack the oxegen befor we lit but I refused. Like asemaster said turn up the gas a little and no soot. By the way dont let that soot touch anything it is neerly imposible to make that crap go away. On a side not a female friend did not want to be in shop class so when it was her turn to light the torch with a rose bud well you can guess. A small class room full of soot and my friend was gone. Reply:Ya my wife made me go and replace a towel I was useing to dry off some water one day outside so I could cut a small plate. It got SOOOOOTTTEEEDD bad. She would not even let me try to wash it. Reply:Turn up your flow on the fuel before igniting. The correct fuel flow for acetylene is when no smoke or "soot" is produced at the proper pressure.SA200,Ranger8,Trailblazer251NT,MM250,Dayton225AC,T  D-XL75,SpoolMate3545SGA100C,HF-15-1  RFCS-14 When I stick it, it stays stuck!
Reply:I was taught in a welding class to use the soot from the acetylene when welding cast aluminum.  Clean your aluminum really well and get is all prepped.  Then coat the piece with sooty acetylene flame until it is black.  Then start to preheat the piece.  The soot burn right off when the piece reaches a hot enought temp. to weld on it.  A guy was working on a part of a motorcycle in the class and used this method the teacher said to and it worked well.
Reply:is it just me or is 12psi a little high for acet. ?? i am always around 5psi on the acet. and 12-15 ish for oxy if cutting, and about 3-5 on both when welding. O/A can be a very dangerous tool, a class for proper use would be greatly recommended. and please be shore to have flash back arrestors on your O/A rig.FWIW; you would be much better off with a good name brand than one of the e-bay cheepo's. some tools were just not meant to be bargain basement value.the soot is used a lot in aluminum, also good for loosening it up before bending/working it. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
