I really enjoy looking at all the projects here. Been busy lately, and don't have the time I would like to devote to it.For the new guys...........Before you pat yourself on the back on your beautiful welds, dig in a little deeper. It will make you better at what you do, and give you confidence.First time I cut a weld, or broke it, was like going into surgery. I was scared of what the Doc might findGet over it, and do it. You'll have a better understanding of your methods, and your consumables.LarryO, sorry I haven't gotten to the pics of the 7016, been hectic around here.Run a weld, cross section it, or do a breakover test. See what's on the inside. It's not a totally definitive test, but it gives you a clue.A note on the pics......the left side of the pics is the actual weld, the right side is the tackPic one.........6013 beadPic two.......7018 beadPic three..... cross section of 6013 beadPic four.....cross section of 7018 beadPic five..... simple breakover test to look for inclusions and other nasty things6013 clearly shows a lack of penetration in the root. 7018 shows good penetration. Breakover test shows no massive inclusions or other bad things. It's inconclusive to a great extent because it's a fracture. But it still gives you an idea of what's going on underneath the surface of the weld. Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Good to see ya around.Check your PM's Sam.Going to do another couple of tests soon when i have time.Still trying to get the right acid so i can etch the metal and get a better indication of penetration. Then i will etch some of the previous stuff i done.6013 still leaves a beautiful weld. Ive noted that 7014 looks as good as a 6013, even the slag looks the same but not the flux, and as you well know 7014 is a little stronger but not sure about penetration. Time to TEST, TEST, TEST.Good lookin welds again Sam. |
