I am about to enter a 2 year program in welding at my local community college,  as far as I know they teach every major welding method in this degree program.I am wondering what type of welding pays the best, so I should know what to focus on. I don't plan on doing underwater welding. Thanks in advance-weldingdude

Reply:Choose whichever form of welding you are most comfortable with and have the desire to do well. Without the desire and willingness to improve, welding is not a career option."SOUTHPAW" A wise person learns from another persons mistakes;A smart person learns from their own mistakes; But, a stupid person.............never learns.
Reply:Aerospace has been pretty good to me. Clean work environment, great equipment, great benefits. Two turn tables and a microphone.

Reply:high pressure welding on exotic alloys has done me well for years, haha all the kiddies immediately go for the "Iam going to under water weld" when they see a picture or hear about it its cute, but generally not somthing that happens. Its very demanding on the body. As for them paying well, my uncle has done it for years, he had to work his way up throughout the years to " deep sea rat " i dno xtreme fab but i could most certainly live on his 400,000$ a year as compared to my 130,000$ for working at a generating station coal plant.

Reply:I currently work offshore as a commercial diver "underwater welder/burner" I'm still a tender at the moment which at the time the break out time is 5-6 years before you become a "Diver". For the 5-6 years you'll be tending most new hires are making 14.50-15.50 and hour. I make 17$ which for a week offshore is $1790 before taxes but here's the catch.. I don't work every week. Hell I've only had 2-4 complete pay checks mostly it's 5 days on then off for weather. There's guys making 25k a month doing sat yeah but it's gonna take you years to get to that level.

Reply:The type that pays the best is the type that you enjoy and are really good at.
Reply:Originally Posted by Pressure_Welderexactly what he said, theirs alot of misconception, they figure the second they jump in the water their making 350$ an hr or more. It took my uncle about 15 years and alot of traveling to make the money he does.
Reply:production mig welding has to be the bottom rung in my opinion.
Reply:The process that pays the best is the one that pays the most overtime.  You get overtime during shut-downs at power plants and oil refineries.  They use stick and TIG for all of their pipe and boiler welding.

Reply:I'm working in a mine right now and it's $100 K a year no overtime and $145 K a years if you do as much overtime you can.

Reply:From what I've seen sanitary stainless tig pays well... clean, not as physically demanding as other types, not as repetative, in shop and on site welding, difficult so there's not as much competition when finding a job.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com

Reply:"Quality" welding pays the best.  It's the whole picture, do a good job, don't bother your boss or owner to solve probles you should be solving as the mechanic, remember 2 things, :"Can't do, Can't stay"  and " If I gotta do it , I don't need you"  employment is about what you can do for the guy who is paying you, master your craft and work 7+hours out of 8 and you are better than most. Above all don't be a whiner.    A lot of guys , young guys seemed to be intrigued with the underwater welding and the first thing that comes to mind is " big money"  That enviroment takes it toll on your body, put a price on your life by the day and it doesn't pay as much as you think. I haven't done it, but I have close personal friends who have, not so glamorous by all reports. By the way, I'm told they do more cutting than anything for salvage work, and how much quality do you think you can get underwater?"Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:I live on the Gulf Coast and know two people very well that got hurt real bad while underwater welding.  All of the underwater welders that I know that have not been hurt are very smart guys.  They where born and bred by their dad to do what they do.  They tell the stories of close calls that happen....no thanks. They do make great money.  FWIW
Reply:Most important thing is get a job where you look forward to going to work!   That in its self is priceless. Not many people start making big $$$ right off the line!   Put some time & effort in, Learn the craft and your on the way.AEAD 200LE, Lincoln precision tig 185, Millermatic 251, Spectrum 625 extreme, Victor torch , Smithy 1220LTD. and  Do all C-4 band saw ,  Always adding.
