Anyone know what is the best method to "un weld" galv. roof decking? This stuf was puddle welded(not by me....honest)rose bud till the puddle melts?Grinder?heat with an arc till the puddle melts again?I duno!G
Reply:I have seen hole saws used to take up decking. Not the prettiest or easiest way, but it worked. Torch, saw grinder...whatever works. There isn't one specific way it has to be done. BTW, plug welding is the accepted way to weld it down.
Reply:OA torch cutting head, burn away the decking around the weld, repeat, repeat repeat............................................  ..................................................  ..................................................  ................................. Return with grinder.Fastest way I have found.Jimmy
Reply:If they made nice neat welds you might be able to find a spot weld cutter that would do the job. Look anywhere that sells body shop tools. If they made welds bigger than any spot weld cutter turn the torch way down low and press the O2 lever just enough to burn through the top layer. Cut aroung the weld and grind off the weld after pulling the decking up.
Reply:O/A is what I used the one and only time I did it. It sucked bad and my back still hurts 15 years later. Get a big cutting tip so the pre heat goes faster and lay the torch at a flat angle hit the lever. After 5 or 6 I got fast at  but there were a lot. By the way mine was a roof srction that colapsed at my facility under heavy snow. Thankfully there was so much snow nobody was there. Steel Thunder Welding LLC. Reply:A piece of ply say 3'x 1'   3/8" thick . Welds 3/4" diameter ? 1" hole saw , drill hole in ply.Put hole in ply over weld , stand on ply and when you drill the sheet the bit wont wander all over the place . As long as its not too steep.A good guess is better than a bad measurement
Reply:thanks for the replies alli notice that steiking an arc long over the spots till it's all molten again didn't get a mention.....that ill save me some embarrassment then!G

Reply:I was going to post the tip that Brett posted! It's what I call an "external" pilot, as opposed to an internal pilot (drill bit). If slipping is a problem, a bit of soft rubber or weatherstripping will help. I use this technique (with 3/4" plywood) when using a hand held core drill to make holes in concrete or stone. All I can add now, is that an extension on the drill might save some wear on the back.Last edited by tessdad; 01-24-2008 at 07:21 AM.Just my  opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
