I have a question about theory for everyone. I was helping the pipeline weldor again the other day and noticed on the stringer he used a E6010 and hot passes he used a E8010 (I have actually noticed this for years, just never asked anyone). I asked why he was using the 6010 on the stringer and he said the 8010 was too brittle (I kinda figured). I ask why the 8010 when the root pass only had 60,000 tensile strength and he said because the SOP calls for it.I said I know it calls for it, I have to read the SOP's too (I can be a smarta**) . He then said so they don't have to carry so many rods on the truck. Then he got busy and I got busy and we never finished the conversion.So my question, what it the reason for a 8010 over a 6010 root? Obviously the tensile strength is not an issue (the pipe he was welding has a 42,000 tensile anyway). My little brain is wondering why not 6010 throughout? Reply:Possibly an alloy issue? Might be a feature of the 80 rod that is desirable besides the strength.
Reply:Several mutli-layers welds in my reference books show a root pass with 6010 and subsequent passes with 7018. There is a recommendations to use the lowest yield strength filler that is adequate for the load to decrease weld metal cracks, HAZ cracks, and lamellar tearing. Reply:The root pass is the weakest part of a pipe weld. It probably has something to do with what Teddco said about the weaker root pass being able to give instead of crack. I don't know about 8010, but 6010 is a fast-freeze deep penetrating rod and is ideal for open root passes. I imagine 8010 is the same, but I never used or even heard of it.

Reply:Years ago, my employer was adding stiffener beams to the existing overhead craneways. We added W8's to the underside of the W24's already there, along with new auxiliary columns. The existing beams had been painted an unknown number of times thru the years. Rather than grind, burn, or some other time consuming method of removing paint, I discovered that I could use 3/16" 8010 electrodes, and burn right thru the paint. The welds were quite satisfactory, and no cracks ever showed up. Mind you, the craneways were about 1400 lin feet of 3" stitch welds.
Reply:also a 8010 if you notice burns cleaner than a 6010 by quite abit. and tends to foat out trash so its would be easier then to not bust xray.2001 dodge 3500 with custom bed, 1995 miller 44dlx welder and all the equipment any welder needs!
