I am building my turbo setup on my car and I have a few aluminum joints for piping I need to weld.  I personally do not feel comfortable enough welding these expensive tubing connectors (wiggins connectors for those car guys here) and the cast aluminum elbow to my turbo, etc.The idea just came to my head that maybe I can MIG weld some tacks for the piping to hold it together so I can bring it to a friend/shop to weld.  Its difficult to get my whole car to a friend because it, well, doesn't drive.  But if I made the pieces in the garage with the band saw and aluminum tubing and such, I could tack it and bring it to my bud for welding. Is this a good idea?  Or, what would someone suggest in my situation?  I have no TIG machine in the garage - there is one somewhat near (across street) but I tried doing aluminum with it and ...   yeah I didn't do so good.
Reply:Personally I have never Tigged over a Mig tack..Why not just cut the pieces and mark them with a marker in reference to where they meet and do it that way?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Its about the only way you will get it lined up.  You mig, he can tack with tig, and grind off your tacks.  Do you have a spool gun?Could you learn to use the tig nearby?DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Well the difference is the TIG is like...  BIG.  its in the machine shop across the street about 200' away.  Its very much anchored to the wall.  The car has no engine and is on a lift.  I guess I could like, score them and duct tape them.  My biggest concern is mocking them up with out cheating myself "Oh yeah that fits dead on" and then he starts and its actually welded and its like ... off.
Reply:if you're set up to MIG aluminium then do as David suggested. i get things like this all the time (parts tacked with MIG, to be TIG welded). i just add some more tacks and then take the top off of all the MIG tacks before finish welding
