Has anyone built a hydraulic set up to convert a standard Chevy pickup to a Dump bed ? I have seen them for sale out of texas , $1000 or more not including shipping ... Thats more than i want to spend . I plan to use it to finish off my landscape plans which necesitates busting and dumping 2 walkways and a driveway .. after i may donate it to my father in law in MEX. who has a farm and tons of "farm " chores ..everything is temporary
Reply:What are you wanting to dump?  How bout one of those crank out things?  It's like a tarp that you lay in the bed before filling it.  Then to unload, there is a bar and a crank at the tailgate that rolls up the tarp thing and the load falls off the end.  Kind of like a conveyor. If it includes everything needed, $1000 for a dump kit really ain't that bad.  I've been building a dump trailer and just the parts that make it dump, not counting the frame and such, ain't cheap. My name's not Jim....
Reply:Found it.  Check this out.  It's cheap....http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...6224_200336224My name's not Jim....
Reply:how big of a truck is it? if its only a half ton you dont really have any options. i wouldnt recommend a hydraulic dump bed on anything but a 1-ton or bigger. the smallest hydraulic dump truck we have at work is an old chevy 1-ton with a 454, gets about 5 miles to the gallon. i would say your looking at adding a few hundred pounds when your done with the hydraulic motor, extra battery's, hydraulic cylinder etc...i think northern tool used to have a kit for modifying a bed to a dump bed but im pretty sure its for 3/4 and 1 ton only.I break things for a living...
Reply:Boost , I have seen those units before but i was hoping to get it to dump for what i need  (busted concrete) .. The truck is a 3/4 ton chevy standard 8' bed  350 cu" . Im only going about 2.5 miles to the reclamation site .. so the truck can handle it .. last year i pitched about 10 yards of busted concrete to the same yard in a nissan pickup ... Its amazing how much those little S.O.B.'s can carry ..lol  Ihave a trailer that i can use but damn thats unloading by hand ..everything is temporary
Reply:A few general thoughts. We've been lucky enough to manage to grab 2 used dump bodies from a salvage yard near us. The guy mostly caters to heavy equipment, construction and trucks. The one was off an old township F350 and used to build a small 1 ton sized dump trailer. The 2nd was a complete replacement, hydraulics and all for a 9' Mack. Neither bed and hardware ran more than $200.We've found about a half dozen such yards around us. Some are a bit of a drive, up to 2 hrs away, but there are deals to be had if you keep your eyes open. We managed to score a flatbed, a utility body, as well as numerous doors and accessories for other trucks over the years and 3 decent plows. One other thought I can rent a 10K dump trailer from the rental place near me for about $100, less if you are getting a machine from them at the same time. If you plan it right that may be all you need to get the job done. Break it all up first, then get the trailer and make your runs..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:dsw , I'm liking the dump trailer idea you mentioned . I'm going to see what theyre getting here in calif  for renting one .. ty  Sireverything is temporary
Reply:I got this pic somewhere off the net a while ago.
Reply:You said that after your done with it, it will find a home on your Fathers farm I thinkI've considered building a dump trailer.  Here's the kicker thoughIf you have access to a tractor with hydraulic remotes on the farm, I know it's not your situation, but it's fun to kick around. Why not forget about the hydraulic pump, and all that goes with it.  Build a trailer/truck with ram only, and use the tractor hyraulics to do the work??If it's farm only, it is a cheap solution.(some little Harbor Freight dude in China is gettin' out his drawing pencils as we speak)Ideas come from the good old USA, and cheap crap comes from ChinaAccording to "Anouncements" this site is now allied with some foreign site, so who knows??????Look for it in your weekly HF flyer next yearLast edited by farmersamm; 10-26-2009 at 11:33 PM.Reason: added "to""Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I was forced to install one of those Piece of CRAP barnyard hoists onto a brand new 2008 Ford F-350 back in '07.The whole kit just about made me puke.Absolute Garbage.Problem after problem.Had to weld the rear bumper to the hinges for the bed.No more trailer hitch. No way to hold the bed down - waved at people going over railway tracks.Rattled & Banged.I could step on the Step gate, and lift the box off of its rest stops.All-in-all it was just a really poor experience.NOW.... For the GOOD NEWS!!!I found a much, much better system out there, that I would gladly install on any truck.Slicker than greased you-know-what...http://www.stealthdumptrucks.com/http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=.../5/21fP1jjDXeYSite had YouTube videos, links etc etc.Looks like a really, really good productLater,Jason

Reply:If I remember correctly Stacey(sp) from Trucks installed a system which utilized a large airbag (probably about the size of one of the smaller bags like they use on roll-over recoveries)  It's been years since I've seen the episode.FOUND IT! http://www.loadhog.com/  I'm pretty sure it's the same one.  If color is anything to go off of it's the same after looking at it more I wouldn't recommend it Last edited by Brink, M.E.; 10-27-2009 at 01:10 AM.MikeConstans Fides et IntegritasLincoln Weldanpower 150 ACAirco Aircomatic MIGet CAV II w/ spoolgunMillermatic 30a wirefeeder
Reply:Wolf , thanks for the sites , I actually been all over the net and ran into those two MFG'rs myself .. the stealth one is almost $2400 and i found the cheesier one for $984 not including delivery ... the stealth one costs $900 more than i paid for the truck ... definately not going that route .. but i agree that the stealth unit appears to be superior .. you know the old adage .. you get what you pay for ...everything is temporary
