Is there anyone out there that has a set of plans they would be willing to share?  Want to restore a Geo Metro Convertible for the wife, and I'm just gettin to old and it's gettin to cold for gettin on the ground. Thanks Ahead, George. If I Can't Weld It!-----It Can't Be Welded!
Reply:No plans, but some thoughts. One thing you have to be concerned with is the center of gravity. Trying to roll a heavy off-balance load in a free turning rotator is awkward and dangerous. I remember a shop-built rotator, that solved the problem. It wasn't built for cars, but it had some ingenious basics that I think would work great for cars. The rotator's bearings were the full floating hubs and spindles, cut off the rear axle from a 3/4 ton truck. The rotating mechanism, and stop, was made from a brake slack adjuster (used on heavy trucks with air brakes) splined to the end of one of the hub's axle shaft. Adjustable arms were bolted to the wheel studs, and then welded or bolted to the load. This system was used to roll much heavier loads than a Metro. Loads turned smoothly and easily on precision bearings, and could be stopped anywhere with the slack-adjuster drive and holding system.Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 10-31-2008 at 01:05 AM.

Reply:I like that Jim, nice work. I've thought several times about doing one for work on our trailers and flat beds. The big issue has always been how to lift the assembly to rotate it. The trackhoe won't fit in the shop at the same time the trailers are in. Usually we just flip them in the yard and set them on saw horses, but then we can't work on wet days. (Rain days are also the best days to work as we can't do anything else but shop work )I'll have to keep this in mind for the future and start gathering parts for the next time around..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Here is a thread I had about the rotisserie I built. The pics may be helpful to you.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=28859
Reply:On another site I saw half-circle pieces of wood on the front and back of the car which allowed a controlled roll while none of the vehicle touched the ground.  Don't know how it was fastened to the vehicle but it worked.  Couldn't have cost more than $20 in wood.
