Are there other hazardous and or radioactive materials that are commonly used in welding that I should know about?
Reply:Be more worried about cell phone radiation.
Reply:Your over thinking this too much. The true danger is the dust from sharpening and it is only if you deliberately breath it in.
Reply:Yep..Worring about nothing..The dangers of just walking into a shop with machines and tools is enough to be concerned with..As far as grinding tungsten and the intense dangers within..Read this.http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=13220...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Just use lanthalated and call it a day. I would be more worried about radon buildup in your basement than thoriated tungsten. Its been used for decades with little trouble, asbestos and cadmium have caused far more trouble along with zinc galvanising and chlorinated brake clean (read up on mustard gas and phosgene if you want to see what happens when welding and brake clean get together)- did that once, not going to happen again.

Reply:I got a whole handful of 'old' Coleman gas mantels (in plastic bags) for use in Coleman pressurized white-gas laterns.  These are/were to 'good' ones with thorium. - pure white and bright lightFrom Wikapedia...The original mantles gave off a green-tinted light and were not very successful, and his first company, which established a factory in Atzgersdorf in 1887, failed in 1889. In 1890 he discovered that thorium was superior to magnesium, and in 1891 perfected a new mixture of 99% thorium dioxide and 1% cerium dioxide that gave off a much whiter light and produced a stronger mantle. After introducing it commercially in 1892 it quickly spread throughout Europe. The gas mantle remained an important part of street lighting until the widespread introduction of electric lighting in the early 1900s.Safety of thoriumSince thorium is radioactive and produces a radioactive gas, radon-220, as one of its decay products, there are concerns about the safety of thorium mantles. Some nuclear safety agencies make recommendations about their use [1]. A study in 1981 estimated that the dose from using a thorium mantle every weekend for a year would be 0.3-0.6 millirems, tiny in comparison to the normal annual dose of a few hundred millirems, although a person ingesting an entire mantle would receive a comparable dose of 200 mrem (2 mSv; [2], [3]). However, the radioactivity is a major concern for those people involved with the manufacture of mantles and with contamination of soil around some former factory sites [4]. All of these issues have meant that alternatives, usually yttrium or sometimes zirconium, are used in some countries although they are either more expensive or less efficient. One potential cause for concern is that particles from thorium gas mantles "fall out" over time and get into the air, where they may be ingested in food or drink. These particles can also be inhaled and remain in the lungs or liver. Also of concern is the release of thorium-bearing dust if the mantle shatters due to mechanical impact. Secondary decay products of thorium include radium, actinium, and radon gas.Way back when... when I heard those mantles were going to disappear , I loaded up at clearance prices.  Yeah, I worked in the nuclear industry and knew their demise was due to public paranoiya - not anything based upon logic or reality.  I keep em in my basement to augment my falling radon levels.  Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:dude, If you are worried about the small hazards in welding maybe you shouldn't drive, walk, or go to the store.  There are more hazards in all of those than welding.
Reply:This guy just will not give up. I am only a hobby welder and the black dust you are covered in after only a few hours in the shop would concern me much more than the Tungsten.I was a cabinet maker and I figure that all the dust from that has already started the damage to my lungs. Reply:Lets see hazardous materials in welding...Hexavalent chromium, zinc from galvanized steel, fine particle dusts produced by grinding/sanding,  A variety of toxic smokes and gasses. Almost all welding gasses in one way or another, oxygen ( a rapid oxidizer and poisonous in high concentrations over time), acetylene, propane ( flammable/explosive), helium, argon, CO2 9 all asphyxiants). Chemical solvents and acids. Paint fumes. Lead ( if doing soldering work or using brass/ bronze alloys)...Then there is always the "normal" hazards, hot metals, electric arcs, rapidly moving tools and equipment. heavy items ( pinch/crush injuries), sharp edges, flammable solvents and paints.I'm sure I'm missing a few thousand more, especially if you live in Kalifornia, where everything has been linked to birth defects and cancer in one for or another..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:What gets me about this azzwipe is his forum name "weldingdude".This guy (by his own admission) has NO INTEREST in welding.  He's just looking for the easy way out of this country and into his beloved Norway.I can't understand why our moderators continue to let this turd stink up the board.PS.  For all his concerns about thoriated tungsten, you'd think the dumbazz would at least learned how to spell it.  Yepper.  We got a real researcher on board here.Last edited by SundownIII; 12-27-2011 at 12:05 PM.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:Just a little advice, He or she is just stringing everybody along just to get responses.  Look at the other thread weldingdude started.  There's people all over the different forums just screwing around and this ones no different.  Just stop responding and eventually this individual will go away and bug another forum.Linde V160 MigmasterLincoln AC/DC 225CE 200amp migCE 90Amp flux-core welder
Reply:Here's a cool visualization of thoriated tungsten giving off radiation:[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tgp2eBqZUs[/ame]I saw one of these cloud chambers in VA last week, and was instantly hooked.  They're simple to build, so it seems like a fun project.  One of the first things i wanted to do with it was put a piece of thoriated tungsten on it to see if it really does radiate... and i figured someone else has already done it by now.... Youtube confirmed, lol. Here's another cloud chamber vid, with the beginning showing how much activity we're bombarded with every day:[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Efgy1bV2aQo[/ame]
