Thought i'd ask for some constructive criticism.my wife's cart broke a while ago and this was my solution.  It consisted of lap welding an 1/8" washer over the top of an existing strap that broke (1/16 ish)The welds were done at about 70 to 75 amps AC (hard to tell on the machine) with 3/32" 6011.this is my first time ever welding anything that thin, and first time ever with 6011.i did grind on a couple of my first attempts to check for porosity and penetration, and they appeared to be good.but looking to input.  the un-ground welds arent super pretty, but the appeared to be solid.#1, typical lap weld to thin strap before grinding.#2, same location other side after grinding.#3, lap/edge weld to tie the washer into the upright.  welded in 3 passes. before grinding. sorry, this is the best angle i could get without tearing it all apart again.#4, same location other side after grinding.Anything i can do better?i'm actually kind of proud of getting this one fixed.
Reply:Mig would work better if you have one but it looks like they will hold! IMOAEAD 200LE, Lincoln precision tig 185, Millermatic 251, Spectrum 625 extreme, Victor torch , Smithy 1220LTD. and  Do all C-4 band saw ,  Always adding.
Reply:i agree a mig would be great.  i think i'll start looking into prices for a decent wire-feed.  I seem to make more small projects than large ones.the welds "felt" good.  and the ones that i ground down actually looked better than the ones i didnt.  they were "prettier" anyway.i like the way 6011 "burns in", just seems like you can really feed the stick into the puddle.  I never did burn through either, and that surprised methanks!anything i can do better?it looks like maybe my circles were too big or was going to fast on #1?Last edited by Meborder; 12-26-2011 at 12:49 AM.
Reply:get ahold of some 1/16 6013If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before the bag of luck is empty."-Grandad circa 1990ish
Reply:I'll take 6011 over mig every day of the week for repair work. It looks like you got it done. Making it purdy is the part that takes time though, lots of time. City of L.A. Reply:I think i'm going to go buy some thin scrap steel just to play with.i've been told that you can weld 6010 vertical down.  is it the same with 6011?Of course, i'm going to try some vertical up, but in a pinch ive been told that it is acceptable to use the 6010 vertical down.i've never welded with thin stuff, offers new challenges
Reply:as Tanglediver said i to prefer stick over mig for repairs. i second the 1/16" 6013 for that thin.225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw

Reply:Anvil 6010 is a DC only rod. There will be a big difference on how 6010 and 6011 runs on AC.Both 6010 and 6011 are deep penetration rods, but they are also fast freeze rods. I know a few people who can weld sheet metal with these even though they are deep penetrating rods. It's the fast freeze part that makes them suitable for sheet metal. It takes a fair amount of skill however to do this, so it's not the best way for someone just learning. I know I've seen some stuff here from DDA52 he's done with 6010/6011 on thin sheet in the past. I don't have the stick skills to pull that off well myself..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I had a heck of a time finding 3/32" rod.  In fact, when i went in to get this 3/32" 6011, they had about 7 pounds of it on the shelf.  When i went to pay for it they said it wasnt in the inventory and gave it to me for free.  So i asked if they wanted to get rid of the rest of it too.  I got 7 pounds of it for nothing because they hadnt sold any in 3 years.not sure where i can go to find thinner rods.I'm kinda liking the idea of a 1/16" 6013.  I've got a horse trailer that is rusting out around the bottom, so i was going to plate the sides from the bottom up about 3 feet or so. I'm thinking this might be just the ticket.
Reply:Tractor supply sells the 1/16" 6011.http://tsc.tractorsupply.com/search?...archButton.y=5I'm surprised they simply gave it away! When I worked retail they'd have had to charge you at least something even if it was like $1 each..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:6011 is a all position rod. Downhill is fine. Any AC rod will work with DC and make a smoother weld than with AC. 6010 is easier to do downhill stringers with than 6011, even when using DC current for the 6011.Last edited by Oldtimer; 12-27-2011 at 05:57 PM.
