I was thinking of having my students fabricate a log splitter that ran off a hydraulic bottle jack. This would be for my more entry level students. Does anyone have any ideas or pics for something like this?AG MECH DUDE

Not in a labor camp way his boy wanted to split wood with dad but the old tractor driven one was too dangerous for him to use. It worked well when we tested it in the shop.

Reply:Just off the top of my head this sounds like a horrible idea.  Log splitters require a LOT of throw to actually split a log.  Bottle jacks don't have nearly enough travel to accomplish the split.  On top of that, to split even a single log it would take considerable pumping a manual pump using a long-stroke hydraulic cylinder.  I have seen long throw manual cylinder log splitters advertised, but I bet everyone who bought one later regretted it.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:Well I'm sure the project is more for welding practice than practicality, but an air/hydraulic long ram jack would help ease some of the work I'm sure (money permitting)MikeConstans Fides et IntegritasLincoln Weldanpower 150 ACAirco Aircomatic MIGet CAV II w/ spoolgunMillermatic 30a wirefeeder
Reply:I wish the schools I attended had provided cool classes like welding-electronics-auto repair.  However, if the kids make something for welding practice, I think it would be more satisfying to make something you would actually use after you make it.  Maybe he didn't mean "bottle jack" in the original project description.  A long-ram hydraulic jack would make a much more practical log splitter.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:Thanks for the info. I actually found out some news today that would allow us to fabricate a gas or electric powered splitter. Thanks for all the info. it really helps!AG MECH DUDE
Reply:Do you have much experience in welding/fabricating? If so you might be able to do this project in stages. Maybe build the frame in one stage. The hydraulics in another. etc...Tim Beeker.
