maybe a year ago my daughter asked me for a coat tree. i worked with her on some design elements, internbet searches, and we came up with a plan. it involved some scrolly type hooks on top for the coats and hats to hang on. this brought up the question how to make these. i ended up with a harbor freight bender scroller twister . this brought up the question how to use this thing. this led to much experimentation , as this device is less than intuitively obvious to me. i had to build a heavy base for it, which after literally twenty years gave me something to do with this piece of metal i call the turtle that ive had in the yard .. it was demo'd out of a high pressure steam boiler , was actually the domed flanged outlet that the steam came through for thirty years of boiler life. 30" in diameter, 1-1/2" thick riveted construction,,maybe 250 pounds.. welded it to some beams so the beam flange would dig into the ground to help it resist the forces involved in turning some thicker rod. this in turn led to the question of how to transport / store the many heavy partds of this bender...some circular dies, pins, scroller attachments, a heavy bending manual fork i eneded up making and using because there are things i couldnt get the hf bender to do... needless to say lots of time went past as this all occurred..somewhere in the summer i got unexpeectedly)into purchasing a 1929 south bend lathe, which cot llllottts of time on the net, ...during which zero welding got done..point of this long ramble... one thing led to another, but i got it done today, her birthday, and she was very happy with it.the end. Reply:yup, 10" gate valve.that one has a nice pattern. i have a few large ones .that one is 16" diameter.
