I started out a few weekends ago. I have never built a trailer before but have owned quite a few. All the pieces just fell into place to build one so i did. The frame is 3in C channel the tongue is some heavy *** 5/8in angle i had in the garage and the cross members are 2x2 1/4in thick. Everything but the cross members, coupler, and wheels were laying around. I have a total of 200 bucks in this thing and really like it. I still need fenders but thats it.  I built this and welded it enough with my 180 mig to load it up and had a pro weld it up. I cut everything with my 4.5in angle grinder.
Reply:How does your crossmember (under floor) spacing compare to commercial built units?  I've never really looked at one."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:i looked at my neighbors farm supply trailer and his only had 4. 1 at the front 1 in the back and  2 in the middle. Mine has 1 at the front 1 in the back and 3 in the middle.
Reply:I'm too over cautious.  I never trust wooden floors on a trailer unless the spacing is around 16".  I always worry about the clearspan beneath the lumber.  Stupid boards have a bad tendancy to rotMy theory is, that even if a wheeled vehicle breaks through the floor, the crossmembers are close enough to support the wheels on their own.  Wheeled vehicles present a concentrated load at small points.  I would imagine a snowmobile would be more spread out though"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Well i hope its ok its only ment to haul a single four wheeler the spacing is 30in apart. It will be stored indoors if that makes a difference.

Reply:I wouldn't worry about it.  My dads got a factory built car trailer that's prolly close to 20yrs old now.  Lived it's whole life outside and still has the original non-treated planks.  I think the spacing under it is 24" if I remember correctly.  My point is....I'd bet those planks outlast the flimsy expanded found on cheap trailers at the big box stores. My name's not Jim....
Reply:Almost forgot....I don't see any place to hook on tie down straps. My name's not Jim....

Reply:Looks really good, +1 on the lack of tie down hoops tho.
Reply:I ordered D rings from e trailer they just havent been ready for pick up yet. I work at a precast concrete plant as a yardman and i see broken boards all the time but it seems to happen when someone drops a man hole from 3 feet onto it our boom truck beds are on 24in centers. Ill keep a eye on it but with a 600lbs load im not too worried. My neighbors 5x10 i looked at for ideas was a lot lighter in construction and he often over loads it with rock or mulch. If i have to i can un bolt the outer boards flip it upside bown and put a few more in place. Thanks for the advise ill keep it in mind for the next one
Reply:The stained boards are a nice touch, but you will rue the day you went with those boat trailer tires. As most things go, after you built it, you will see the 300 things you should have done differently or wish you hadn't done at all.Enjoy your trailer.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:I know.. the tires are tiny but a buddy bought them for a project and never completed it.I paid 10 bucks for them, Im looking on craigslist for a set of 15in wheels. I figure they will be good spares. With this being my first one looking back i would change some things
Reply:where are you located?  Maybe somebody here could help ya out with wheels. My name's not Jim....
Reply:none of the wood floors last like the old 79 ford  dump... they had good hard wood ..28 years it lasted I had to replace last year and it sat with junk in it all the time....I suppose oak decking would cost more than the trailer though... cross members and disposable decking now darn pine crap LOL...Lincoln 225 Tombstone,Miller Big 20,Hobart 180,150' Argon,A/D hobart hood 22 Ton Log splitter,79 F350 dump eats 4.75 TONS and still turns cutters, grinders,And a  Hypertherm POWERMAX 30

Reply:You might have screwed yourself with the wheels. They look like 4 bolt rims to me. All the 15" ones in my catalog are for 5 or 6 bolt. Also note not all rims are the same bolt pattern so be sure that you are looking at the right ones..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:The wheels are 5 bolt  i can buy a new wheel and 15in tire for $125 at Charlies Farm and Home. I am just not trying to wrap alot of money up right now. The axle was all ready laying around so thats why i went that lug pattern.
Reply:Hey it's a nice light trailer. You had fun building it and it will serve you well for what your gonna do with it.Who's your helper?South Arkansas RebelMiller 210 W/ Spoolgun& dual tank rackMiller Thunderbolt AC/DC
Reply:Thats my right hand man Joe when it comes to working on stuff. Between him and my girlfriend im pretty sure we can do just about anything.
Reply:I welded a receiver tube on my four wheeler so i could drag it around with it. Here are some more pics
Reply:heck yeah id say ya made a nice little trailer. the last one i built i discovered that ford ranger wheels bolted right up to the axel. bought the axel at tractor supply. i think it was a 3500. i went to the car graveyard and bought two wire wheeled em and painted them and they work great! 10 bucks each too.
Reply:nice work. id add D rings all around it for tie down points though. maybe fenders too?
Reply:I like it!  Once you get the tie-down anchors and all that it will be a wonderful little piece!  Have a Jeep Cherokee?  Click Here!
