Hey everyone, first time post, long time viewer. I am the FFA adviser at a school in south Texas. This trailer is a project a few of my students did for our schools maintenance department. Reply:Nice looking trailer, and its still nice to see that some kids do enjoy working a bit.  That was one of the best things about when I was in high school, both my ag teacher and my metals teacher were both farmers, tinkerer's, etc. and always had things for us to work on if we didn't have our own project.  Senior year for me was the best, homeroom, Ag shop, study hall, ag class, metals 2, study hall, lunch, then the afternoon I had a few enviro classes.Thanks for sharing.Trbo

Reply:I noticed the single straight member from the frame to the bulldog hitch supported by two braces. I was wondering what considerations drove this decision if any, rather than having two members from the sides meet into a hitch configured to receive two members.I have not built a trailer...just asking as I have seen both the two member hitch type in the catalogs and noticed the different styles on the road.How to do the math in order to know the proper angles to cut and weld in order for the two angles to meet at a fixed distance from the frame also puzzles me.Can anyone comment please?

Reply:we did he tongue like this because we followed a set of plans from trailerplans.com. The next year we built one, and used channel instead of angle. We also ran the channel to the front shackle of the axle assembly.AG MECH DUDE

Draw a straight line back to the center of the trailer. this gives you the right angle to make all the math work. If you know how far out you want the tongue to be (say 5') and you know the distance from the center of the trailer to where the angled piece will hit (say 3') you can determine the angles you want. Tangent is Opposite leg over adjacent leg on the right triangle for the angle you are looking for. The tan of 3/5 will give you the cut at the hitch to get both to meet perfect. The tan of 5/3 would give you the angle where the diagonal member meets the front frame, add 90 if you want to match the side frame.Hope this makes sense.
