TIG pulse mode, what, why and when?

My TIG machine has a pulse mode function, at the risk of appearing totally dumb can anybody explain what the pulse mode does and why and when would you use it? Thanks.
Reply:Sure Pulse allows you to get deep penetration with out putting as much heat into the base metal as if you were running that amount of amps all the time.  Its AVERAGE current that is lower.  You still use max current to get penetration, but it backs off and allows the puddle to cool.When I started out, I used it a lot because it sort of makes the dimes for you.  I don't need the dimes or I can make them my self.  I don't use pulse much, but out of position welding is easier with pulse on.Background current can be 1/3, 1/2, or 1/10 of the welding current.  It all depends on what you are doing.  Usually I run it about 1 to 3 hz.  It can also help you keep rhythm when welding.  I don't use it much any more even out of position.  Pulser may stop by, he has a much better understanding than I do.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Actually well maybe it's dependant on the machine but background amperage is a percentage of the peak amperage. Amperage peak setting is the percentage of time that your at amperage peak. PPS is the number of pulses per second --Gol'

Reply:Yes, I use a TA-185.  I went to buy an invertec 205, but the LWS steered me towards the Arcmaster 185.  He done me good!  DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
