I am starting to build my new vertical smoker. I cut the end off my tank and will use it for a four foot diameter grill. I plan to stand the tank up and make a vertical smoker. The tank is four feet in diameter and six and one half feet tall and 3/8 thick. Plan A is to weld a plate on the bottom to close it again and then another plate higher to create the bottom firebox ( not necessarily in that order of course. Then have round grates one on top of the other that are adjustable in height. They will be suspended from the top on a center pole. This pole will be motorized to rotate. This for cooking and to facilitate loading and unloading the grates. I will start with three doors. One for the firebox and two for the cook chamber. The firebox door and the lowest cook chamber door will extend all the way to the bottom of each chamber to ease cleaning out.Do you all think I will need to use firebrick or some sort of barrier to keep too much radiant heat from the cook chamber? I intend to have multiple stacks at different heights and a damper between the firebox and cook chamber. It is now Monday night November 23. What you see in the picture is what I did this morning to have a look inside the tank. I hope to smoke turkey for Thanksgiving...........I have a couple of hard days ahead of me I think.Any advice will and would be appreciated. I am in Germany so it is not so common to have a smoker here.I have a picture I just took in front of my tractor to give you a perspective on the size of this thing.

Reply:You wont need any firebrick, you might want to add a diffuser in the bottom of the cooking chamber though. Head on over to www.thesmokering.com, every smoker you could ever want is over there and the guys are great. I'm glad to see another one being put together, mine was in action last weekend. If you cannot convince them, confuse them. Harry S Truman
