i'm half way through my first year weldingpassed a first try at a flat position, butt joint, with 30 degree bevels on either side (no feather edge)I was wondering if anyone could possibly post some tips or hints that could be used to get quality welds in each position (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead)i've only tried flat and horizontal so farroot pass with 60115 filler passes with 7018Sorry for the slack paintshop drawing, but below is a project picture to show what we have to doFlat position6011 = setting of 60-75 seemed to work for me, 20-45 degree travel angle, whip and pause motion (i still find starting and ending, i wont burn through the tacks as well as id like too, need practice7018 = (first pass) travel angle, small circles stringer all the way across, i set it to about 110-125(second-6th) travel angle, aimed at toes , stringer(leaving the top edges exposed for guidlines for 5/6th passes)Horizontal position6011 = setting 90, whip pause, travel anglle, 0-20 upward angle7018 = 110-125 setting, 0-10 degree angle up comprensate for gravity, stringersMore advice or tips or hints for all positions would be muchly appreciated, thanks in advanceTHANKS in advance for any advice, its much appreciatedYes, i own a FREE Porn site
Reply:i discovered that i can do a whip and pause root pass in all positions and they look very neat, uniformed and consistant(horizontal)but still cant get full penetration, just flush, or even with the two platesthought it might have been to wide of a gap i had, closed it up some but i got same result (flush)tried again with same gap but with a smaller arc gap (just barely touching the plate) but i found when i whipped, metal would build up instead of burning the keyhole, not goodi may try a little bit more amps with a vertical type whip and pause methodmy digi pic cam dont have macros for really close up, might be able to get a shaddy pic of it thoi found vertical penetrated more and was fairly easy to maintain the keyhole going up one side, down, across , up other side, etc, worked out well for a first tryoverhead was pretty simple too, except again for the flushness and no convexed root.practice, practice i guessYes, i own a FREE Porn site
Reply:I've never done a horizontal root pass with 6011, but with 6010, you just push it through.  Yup...stick it in the gap and push.  You should be able to feel the electrode melting away.  If you're welding in a booth, you will be able to see the light on the back wall, and it will make a unique sound.I used 100-105 amps, and held a 0 to 5* below horizontal angle (slightly pointing upwards) on the electrode.Miller Syncrowave 200MillerMatic 180 AutoSetHobart Airforce 500iVictor O/A (80cf)
Reply:Putting in a stringer (root pass) with 6011 is doing it the hard way for sure. 6010 makes it so much easier. The only reason I can see for using 6011 is if you are stuck with an AC only welder. I have done it a time or two when I managed to run out of 6010. This was on pipe and it isn't easy to do.

Reply:Oldtimer thinks I am nuts, but I like 6011 for a root pass, though I can do it just as well with 6010 and it is easier with 6010 and doesn't require the heat the 6011 does. My guess is you are running way too cold (I am assuming you are using 1/8th electrodes). With 1/8th I would suggest you try notching it up a bit say about 85 - 90 amps. I usually do it at about 100, but I have had a lot of practice. Basic rule on a root is give it all the heat you can stand, cram it in it and let it burn. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:Go read this. I know it says pipe, but the techniques are the same and you should find it very helpful.http://content.lincolnelectric.com/p...ture/c2420.pdfThe difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.

Reply:I was using 6011 for root passes today. I hate 6010! I love 6011! I use 6010 when I need to really dig in a get a deep root pass. Today I was finishing up a steel job at a new house and I used 6010 yesterday but I broke down and opend up a new box of 6011 and never looked back. I find on 6011 1/8" I use about 90 amps AC. I find in the overhead position my shirt catches fire less often with 6011 than 6010. I pull usually 5 or 10 degrees and do a stringer unless there is a gap then I do a small weave. Be sure to clean your slag well befor you go to the 7018 because it really screws a weld. I always use a wire wheel between passes and it helps especially on overhead. Steel Thunder Welding LLC.
