Ok needs people input here. Been working on getting my mobile rig finished. Took an 8ft utility bed, built a frame and mounted tandem axles. Now I am deciding on how and where I would like to mount my oxy/ace and I am torn. I would really like to not have it in the bed area, and would like to have them mounted in a compartment. I see it done on a lot of the rigs I have seen on the forum here, but from a safety stand point what are your thoughts? I know the ace needs to be mounted upright, but other than that I just have a hard time having the oxy and the ace together, in an enclosed compartment. Reply:I realise the laws are prolly different here but I see guys driving around with oxy/acetylene sets tied to the back of utes (pickups) every day. I see at least 5 or 6 every day.__________________________________________________ _I could not care less where anything is made. I don't fall for the myth that locally made is 'better'. Reply:I had a truck with a vented torch compartment for a couple of years. It was nice.Do you have a plan to get some tongue weight on that trailer? Are you mounting the welder up there?
Reply:From putting together my body, I remember that you will need to have the compartment ventilated if you want to store the acet in there. Easiest way is to simply buy one of the louvered vents and install it in the side or back wall, or the door. Add in some good tie down points as well. Most bottle cabinets on truck bodies have the top of the boxes raised so you can fit a standard 300cf cylinder in the box. With the floor of those front boxes cut away, I see some issues storing large cylinders up front in that box. I would not want to have to hump full size cylinders up high enough to get them in that box when you get the floor back in. Another issue I see is that the body you have has tool box tops rather than the standard flat tops. That means raising the top of the box will be a PITA to make everything work right. If you are talking a small set, this might not be an issue, but the dimensions still look tight for say my 75 cf acet and 100 cf O2 cylinders..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks for the input guys.Yes the welder will be mounted in front of the box, tongue weight should be around 450 if I calculated correctly. I was planning on running a smaller ace in the front portion of the front compartment and then an oxy horizontal in the middle compartment but with the regulator and valve through a hole into the front compartment. All very well secured.Jay DavisAWS-CWIC-60 Specialty Welding ContractorLoving husband, and father of two boys ( |
