Well guys, I've been lurking around here for a little while now and I'm hooked on this site and welding itself. Thought I would throw up a picture of my first project. I'm using a Hobart HH140 and the .030" flux wire it came with. Once I start getting a little better, I'll switch over to C25 gas and solid wire. This cart was made completely from stuff I found in my father-in-law's shop. He's got an old Lincoln tombstone arc welder and a whole variety of other tooling that I can use for future projects. I think the angle might have been a bed frame at one point. The front wheels were from an old moving dolly and I made the spindles they are on from some bolts (Grade 8 maybe, but I can't remember). The rear casters are a touch small, but they will work for now. I'm waiting on the material for the shelves yet (7GA laser cut sheet. It's helpful to make friends with the laser operator and scheduler at work!). Once I get the shelves in and some hooks made up, I'll get all the finish grinding and painting done. I was hoping the sand blast it, but it doesn't look like the weather is going to cooperate with me!This is my first time wire welding. I did some arc welding about 15 years ago in high school, but that was about it. I am basically reading and doing some hands on training!Last edited by ikessky; 10-06-2009 at 11:46 PM.

Reply:Not to shabby ikessky, especially for a first project! The only way to learn is by getting hands on experience! I'm not gonna lie, I couldn't be bothered to build a rack for the welder in the garage and I copped out and bought one from Princess Auto.
Reply:Thanks for the warm welcomes and for the pictures of all your carts. I've spent a considerable amount of time on this board and others looking at what other people have done. I just couldn't bring myself to buy a cart. I mean, I have access to all the tools needed to build one and found material to use. The only problem now is that my wife saw the cart and decided she could come up with all sorts of other things that I could build for her!The top shelf where the welder will sit was initially too long and I discovered it when I went to put the legs on to the lower shelf/base. I ended up having to take two inches out and splice it back together. A gas cylinder would not have been able to fit in the back had I not done that. I'm hoping to get it finished up by the end of this weekend. I need to get my garage put back in order so I can start putting in some heat ducts and insulation.

Reply:Added some plates for the shelves and some hooks on the front. The hooks are just pieces of rebar that I had laying around and I bent them with a homemade bender (AKA my bench vise and a huge pipe). The welds aren't perfect, but they are coming around. I wanted to grind everything and paint it tonight, but I ran out of grinder wheels and it was 11PM.

Reply:Nice job! How's that HH140 treating you? I've been thinking of picking one up.
Reply:I really like it so far. I need to get a gas bottle and some solid wire and start trying sheet metal.
Reply:when I got my HH140..........building a cart was going to be my 1st project......then I started pricing the metal, sheet, casters, etc. Finally, Harbor Freight had their mig cart on sale for $50. It was defiantely less than I was going to spend on materials. So, I pussed out and bought the HF cart. Oh well....... then, I just moved on to other welding.

Reply:I lucked out and had all the material sitting around. I had the shelves cut out of some scrap that we had at work. |
