Just beginning to learn welding for the sheer pleasure of working with metal. Last time was in high school and bobby socks were popular on the girls! Little long in the tooth...but never say an old dog can not learn new tricks. My first project, other than the practice welds I have been doing repetitively, is the proverbial welding table. I am planning a small table 3' x 5' using 2"x2"x1/4" for structure and 3/8" for top. However, I am challenged when placing my order online as to the appropriate choice of material for the top. I see choices for many varieties of steel like A36 hot rolled, A1011 Hot Rolled, A1018 Cold Rolled, etc. Can anyone give me their opinion as to the better choice in this area? I do not plan to stress this table significantly but would like for it to remain serviceable for some time to come. I would welcome your learned opinion and appreciate your sharing your knowledge. Look forward to joining the discussions in the forum more actively.Miller MM 211Miller 375 XtremeO/A
Reply:a36 hot rolled should be the cheapest and willdo fine. cold rolled steel is "better" dimensionally and is cleaner, but no advantage in a table.btw i struck my first arc three years ago at age 58, and  welcome.
Reply:Online steel tends to be very expensive, relative to a lot of local suppliers.  There's a good chance that someone from your part of Texas can point you to a place.Last edited by Jack Olsen; 12-06-2009 at 10:48 PM.Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:Jack and Weldbead...thanks for your responses. As for the online source, I really am just using it to price my project...even though this online business has a Ft Worth physical location, I would always give my local businessman the first opportunity to take my money. We have several reputable metal yards up here and hopefully I can establish a good relationship with them for the longer haul. Thanks!Miller MM 211Miller 375 XtremeO/A
Reply:Save a few pennies and use 1/8" walled tubing.http://www.millerwelds.com/interests...welding-table/I based my table on these plans- My table is 3'x6' no Cutting area though as I use a 55gallon drum with a grate on top and expanded metal for the bottom shelf.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
