Horse Feeder

I'm looking into building the horse feeder below.  The plans recomend using 1" square tubing, but dont indicate what thickness..... would 1/8 be too heavy... would 1/16" hold up to horse abuse?[URL="http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/livestock/horses/facts/06-075.htm"] Attached Images

Reply:Use 3/4 rebar, cheaper and holds up well to horses.
Reply:I think most of the bending occurs when you drop a 1500+ pound bale in there.

I was going to put expanded metal for the tray to catch the drops of hay. I'll let you know what I come up with. Use the heaviest material you can some horses can be rough, but not like cows. Reply:I would have a problem with the design of that round bale feeder.  I would not put the closed tops on the stanchion.  Too many dead horses from hitting there head right at the poll.  I don't care how friendly the horses are with each other.  Make the part where they put there heads open on top.  Remember a horse can and will hurt themselves in a padded stall.  If you don't know what I am talking about I can take a picture of the ones I use for our horses. I don't have a picture now and I am in Germany so it is a minimum of six hours later here than on the East coast of USA.
Reply:Just got done with a internet search, many to look at. Yes I would be intrested in your pics, when you get a chance. I do agree with you and my horse is the only draft in our bunch. when I build mine it will have a open top/headspace. Just trying to make the best possible from all the ours I've seen.
