i laready posted this one on the Hobart forums but would likie opinions from as much knowledgeable people as i can get.  HI Guys! as some of you may already know i purchased a h140 to make some hog traps, well today i some oppurtunity to so do some small welding repairs on a hand truck. The cross braces were a little loose so i figured why not give the little H140 a try. I had some .30 gauge Fc wire that came witht the machine set the amps to 100 and the wire feed to 4. I only needed to weld an area of about 1/2" long in some 1/8" steel. I couldnt weld for shi%%, the wire feed seems way to fast so i lowered it one notch each time till i was at 1 and also lowered the amps till i was at about 40 amps. All of the setting no matter what seems to be producing welds that look like a lump of bird pooop. The wire feed seems way to fast no matter what setting i have it at. I start with a little wire sticking out about 1/2" from the nozzle and by the time i can actually start a puddle my wire has grown 3-4" long and know i need to cut the access and regrind the area that has bird pooop on it. I have done some welding before on my trailer when i had to install some 3/16" side rails using a Lincoln welder and the welds came out pretty darn good for a begginner. is there a possibility that the tesnsion on the wire roll is to loose or something else? thanks guys
Reply:Try speed 1 for the wire and work up.  Don't blame the machine yet.Are there recommended settings for .030 self shielded wire?David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:i tried it 1 and had the amps on 100. i also tried cranking the amperage down till i was at 40 "i also noticed a whining coming from the machine when set that low", but it still seems as though the wire is feeding out to quickly. I may need to find a larger stock material that will allow me to weld longer beads. it might not be the machine but me. Its funny though cause with the Lincoln it seems as though the wire feed was alot slower, it actually gave me time to make a puddle but then again i had to weld about 3-4" at a a time.
Reply:do you have the ground on a painted area or are you trying to weld on a painted area?If it's too . get an office jobLincoln wp225g7 Lincoln 250 idealarcFrankenstein O/A set-up Weld-tech  tig set-upLincoln sp 175 plus profax  arc gouger
Reply:Crank up the amps and you should be fine.
Reply:Thank you guys! Everything is my fault! what i thought was the sire feed 1-4 is actually the amperage and the 10 to 100 is the wire feed! i got everything totally backwards thanks for the help guys.
Reply:Make sure you are connected with the proper DC Electrode Negative for flux core wire. Keep the wire at the lowest setting and crank the "voltage" up! Make a good clean ground on a piece of thick scrap, no paint, no mill scale, no rust, no oil. Get the machine set up first! Then make your repairs. I've run flux core wire with the wrong polarity before, by mistake, just forgot, and the welds looked like KRUD!  Good Luck.Oops, cross post, bad timing! He, he, he! Getter Done!City of L.A. Reply:The #s 1-4 are voltage taps.  Wire feed speed controls the amps.SO set the machine on 1 for thin stuff, and 4 for thicker stuff.  Adjust the wire speed for the best arc.Glad you got it.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
