I recently bought a dual mig/flux welder from Harbor Freight reconditioned that appears to have been tested before being shipped because the wire spool was already setup when I got it and there was wire sticking out of the wire gun that had a molten ball of wire at the end. Problem is when I plug it in and turn it on, the light turns on to indicate that power is present to the welder, but when I clamp the ground cable down to my steel and press the trigger on the wire gun the wire doesn't feed. Does anyone know what the problem might be? In the back of the manual under troubleshooting section it says there may be a fuse blown inside the unit if the wire doesn't feed, but why would the fuse be bad after shipment when it clearly looked as if after they reconditioned it they had tested it and it worked? Any input would be appreciated, I'm going to go check my outlet to make certain it is true 240 output.Mike Dimond[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
Reply:I just took the case off the welder and powered it up after confirming the outlet it's plugged into is in fact 220 volt. The whimpy fan inside is spinning. Power light comes on, but no spark, no wire feed. I checked out the only fuse inside I could see and visually checked to see if it was burnt out and used a multimeter to check if it's good or not. This makes no sense. I'm going to poke around a bit more with this multimeter and see if I can't find out what's wrong without killing myself.Mike Dimond[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
Reply:Ok, I might have figured it out why it won't work. There's three wires. White, Black, and Green. I bought the plug today at home depot, opened it up and like an idiot followed their instructions. White apparently is not ground for this welder. It looks as if green is ground, and both black wire and white wire are the two 120volt lines. So, I'm going to rewire this sucker and see if I can't blow it up entirely.Mike Dimond[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
Reply:Yep, wired it wrong. Always make sure to take your welder apart before wiring it up to an outlet to make sure you don't try to use a 240 volt welder with only 120 volts like I did. Thanks for all the help. Lol.Mike Dimond[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
