I have really started to like how this machine sounds, and i have been able to find most of answers to my questions through searching.  But i cant really find the answer to this:How does the lift arc start function if you use a foot pedal?  I want to know how you control the amps before during and after the start is made. Do you just put your foot down on the pedal, touch the piece, raise the tungsten a little bit and then pick your foot up a little once the puddle has started?
Reply:There are a few different modes available basic pedal control: press the pedal to enable, touch and lift to start, vary current with pedal as needed (pedal is percentage of the panel current), release pedal to stop arc. No need to pull away. The fingertip control works the same way (I really don't like the miller fingertip control)Pushbutton control: works like pedal, but current is fixed at the panel setting. (this is  seperate option in addition to the pedal. If you want this but don't want to pay th money, it is easy to make your own or to modify the pedal to allow this in addition to normal operation)fixed current, no control: Touch and lift to start, pull away to stop. Be sure to come back in for postflow. Default if there is no control plugged in to the machine.Last edited by enlpck; 03-18-2008 at 09:59 PM.Reason: Removed description of option 150STL doesn't have
Reply:I have the Miller 150 STH, which has Lift Start. It works just as you describe, push the pedal, touch the work with the elecrode and lift (which starts the arc), control amperage with the pedal, take foot off pedal to stop welding. You don't have to have the pedal fully depressed to start the arc. Instead of starting with maximum amperage and reducing, you can also start at low amperage and raise it as needed. The STH has High Frequency Start as well, but I usually use the Lift Start.Miller MaxStar 150 STHTIG Advice From Co-Worker - "Just don't burn a hole so big I can't fill it."
