A gas collector mixer machine for your garage on a small scale for welding gases. Do you think it would be cost effective. To do that in your opinion for the average person to do. Over the long run instead of getting them filled.Comments and opinion welcome thanks.Dan Why do you put two cents in when its only a penny for your thoughts? Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC Millermatic 150
Reply:I dunno, sounds a little difficult for something small scale. The Welder Shop has great deals and reviews on Hobart, Miller and Lincoln Welders.
Reply:Are you thinking about generating your own acetylene?
Reply:No, I was thinking like Argon,Co2,Oxygen & Helium those types of shielding gases for mig, tig. Why do you put two cents in when its only a penny for your thoughts? Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC Millermatic 150
Reply:The problem is mixers are expensive and typically designed for a specific combo of input gases.  The last Ar/He mixer I bought ran me just over $1k and I get about 30-40% off.  I am not even sure if an accurate 4 gas mixer is out there.  This doesn't even address the question of is such great diversity of gas needed.I do almost all TIG, and all AL MIG with argon.  The rest of the MIG is C10 90%Ar/10%CO2.Rare is the application requiring He or H blends.  Technology has improved so much that the benefits of custom mixes is really becoming hard to quantify. Most applications I come across use mixers and blends because PQR's and WPS's call for it and it's cheaper to leave them alone.Last edited by Chris welds; 04-14-2008 at 01:36 PM.
Reply:When you say "collector" are you talking about trying to extract gases from the atmosphere?Mixing your own gases, from pre bought tanks, thats one thing, and, if you use enough oddball mixes, might be worth it.But actually trying to separate oxygen, argon, nitrogen, and C02 from the air is usually a minimum of a $20,000,000 machine. Often as much as a hundred million. This is really a "plant" not a machine, and they need a huge customer nearby to justify, usually a plastics plant, a food processing facility, or some other big factory that uses industrial gases on a huge scale.Remember that less that 5% of the industrial gases like argon, helium, and oxygen sold nationwide are used in welding. The other 95% is where the real market, and money is.
Reply:Thanks for the input I appreciate the info. Why do you put two cents in when its only a penny for your thoughts? Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC Millermatic 150
