This weekend I will be welding up a stump grapple for my tractor. The material will be 1/2in A-36 mild steel and a prefab quick attach plate.I will be using a Lincoln AC 225 stick welder with 7018AC.So, here are my questions....hopefully I can avoid some mistakes with your knowledge =]1.  When welding 1/2" to 1/2" perpedicular, should I bevel the edges?2.  What setting should I use for this process?3.  How would you clean the inside corner of a box?  The grinder won't fit, I can't get the brush in there either.4.  What should I do to keep my perpendicular pieces at 90 degrees?  Correct process? Jigs made of wood?Thank you for you input.Marcus Attached Images

Reply:Thank you Zapster.  I have looked at a lot of your work on this site and your level of skill is what I am striving for.  I hope I can get beads that look anything near what you produce.Marcus

Reply:I would go for more like 140 amps for the 7018AC.  Even 150.  1/2" plate is big stuff, use big amps.  No prep needed for a fillet (perpendicular) except grind off the mill scale.  Fillet should be minimum 75% of 1/2", so 3/8" fillet or larger.  I would go for 1/2" fillets.  Its easier to overbuild.  You will need multipass with 1/8" rod.  No preheat needed in my opinion.I don't think you are going to screw it up.  Where are the pics?DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I am going to pick up the steel this afternoon and build it this weekend.  I will photograph the whole process and post it to the projects forum.Marcus
Reply:Go here to see about how many amps to use for the 1/8" 7018http://www.millerwelds.com/education...calculator.phpDavidIgnore my sig Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Good luck with that 7018ac. I tried it on the ac 225 as well and threw most of it away. Now excalibur is a whole nother story. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:I agree with Jolly Roger.  I just used Excalibur for the first time and I will never use anything else unless I have no choice.  It was very nice!
Reply:I finished the bucket part of the project this weeked and will post it in the projects forum this morning.Marcus

Reply:I know if Off topic, but my welding teacher cant stand excaliber, I think it runs good. we had this other 7018 that was red and ran great on pipe, but excaliber is what gets donated so thats what we use. Back OT looking forward to pics, and I agree with the 3/8's bevel. can never have to much penetration.
