New Skid

Reply:Do you have more pictures of your reels. Are they insulated from the rest of the rig. Can you show how you connect the leads from the torch to the reels. By the way nice skid. Josh

Reply:Thanks how is the stinger isolated. As you can tell i'm looking to build a set or reels for myself, in fact i see a alot of ideas from your skid that i'll be using. Nice work. Josh

Reply:But don't the four bolts carry the current to the other end. I'm a bit confused. Josh
Reply:They don't.  Look at his photos again....The bottom reel is the ground, and is not insulated.The top reel is insulated from the skid by the white layer of Delrin, and the four bolts are sleeved with Delrin so they cannot conduct electricity.Look at the photo of the upper reel again - You will see a bolt welded on to the tubing facing outward that is just below the shaft where the reel is installed - THAT is where you attach your welding cable to make the reel "Hot".Thanks much for the pictures Bryan, I enjoy seeing "new ways to skin a cat"I myself, have ShellRyn reels that are manufactured in southern Alberta, that operate on a fairly similiar principle - The biggest difference is that the ShellRyn's are insulated from the shafts, and there is a set of Brass contacts that provide the path for the electricty.  The Brass contacts are sandwiched together when you tighten up the "Hand Nuts" when you are done spooling out cable.The concept is very similiar to your own.Thanks again for the photos.Later,Jason

Reply:Hello Bryan:  I assume sometimes you weld close to the truck and sometimes way out. Just curious if you ever see any difference (good or bad) in the arc due to the large coils...or do you always pull all the lead off? Thanks.TC

Reply:Yes, I have the answers to the questions i was asking. I now plan to attempt to create my own reels, they wont be exact copies but similar to the ones on the skid. Josh
