I just would like to know what you all think is the best way to build a I beam hoist that is going in the back of a truck to pick up 2,000lbs...I have been told that 2 x 4 steel tube for the legs would work with a 4 x 6 I beam?  What do you all think?  Thanks.
Reply:Do a search, there was just one on here.

Reply:Are you asking about making a small jib crane or a gantry.  A gantry would be no problem.  A jib would need a pretty stout base.  The smallest 4x6 beam is a w6x9.  Assuming that beam is cantilevered you can use up to a 4 foot boom and limit your stress to 18 ksi which is a safety factor of 2 for A36 steel.  If it is a gantry which is supported on both ends, then you can go as wide as 8 feet.  The vertical support is very easy and simple for the gantry.  The jib would require some calcs.  Give us an idea of what you have in mind,Rene
