Reply:I think it's gonna be a winner, Samm. Only thing I see to watch is the two long tubes just ahead of the blade gussets. If they start to bend I'd just add some 1/4" x6" flat on edge on top of the tubes from the blade to about 1/2 their length where the leverage wouldn't be so great.                       JMHO,                                 MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:Thanks all, it's been a strange oneFirst time I've taken suggestions and used them (Duane).  Why I didn't originally plan for gussets is a mystery to me.  Not very good design on this oneMike, I'll look for deflection in the long tube run on it's first time out.  I hope I didn't underestimate the resilience of the tubing.  It is a long run.  I might opt for a full width piece of flat to tie it to the shoulders and strengthen the bearing point, and add the strongback on top of the flat.  And it probably would be on the underside of the tubing.  I've had the best luck when I've reinforced the tension side of a member."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:There is a Mount Joy, PA, I can only imagine the pionees around Lancaster back in the day were putting things together, but I don't think they were welding.

Reply:Just a couple of comments, Samm.  Realize, of course, I didn't follow this build from beginning to end.One.   More cross members.   Think a truck frame.   At least one, more probably two, crossmembers between the one you have, and the blade.    Two.   Gussetts.   Granted, a "tension" type gusset would be far stronger, with thinner material, however, being in the area of the material being scraped up, no matter how thin, would tend to ride up on the matted hay, straw, manure, etc. Think about cutting a slot in the flat going across the top of the blade, it's not doing much good anyway, laying a couple of tubes along the top of the pull tubes you have already,   hang them out the back one or two feet, run a couple stiff braces down to the back of the blade. In back, a strong-back type structure.  DON'T run a weld, across the bottom of where the run tubes cross the cross-tube, you are asking for a crack there.Yes, with a strong-back like that, it will limit how close you can get with this contraption, but you can pull 90% of the matted stuff out, go back in later, with a simple three point blade, get the rest out.   Or just wait for the cows to pull it back themselves.   Where you start the double tube, depends a lot on your observations, looking at the flexing, the first time you try it out.Last edited by jsfab; 01-26-2010 at 02:52 PM.
