AWS D1.1 welding on hot dipped galvanized steel: what is required?MUST it be removed? 5.15 Preparation of Base MetalSurfaces on which weld metal is to be deposited shall besmooth, uniform, and free from fins, tears, cracks, andother discontinuities which would adversely affect thequality or strength of the weld. Surfaces to be welded, and surfaces adjacent to a weld, shall also be free fromloose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, andother foreign material that would prevent proper weldingor produce objectionable fumes. Mill scale that can withstandvigorous wire brushing, a thin rust-inhibitive coating,or antispatter compound may remain with thefollowing exception: for girders in cyclically loadedstructures, all mill scale shall be removed from the surfaceson which flange-to-web welds are to be made.Any other places to support its removal? or places to support is not being removed?
Reply:FB, Per AWS D1.1 yes it must be removed. The key word is "shall". 5.15 Preparation of Base MetalSurfaces on which weld metal is to be deposited shall besmooth, uniform, and free from fins, tears, cracks and other discontinuities which would adversely affect thequality or strength of the weld. Surfaces to be welded, and surfaces adjacent to a weld, shall also be free fromloose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, andother foreign material that would prevent proper weldingor produce objectionable fumes. The portions of the surfaces which will be weldedshall be thoroughly cleaned of all foreign matter including paintfor at least 2” [50 mm] from the root of the weld.jrw159Last edited by jrw159; 02-17-2012 at 02:25 PM.
