I have a large project using two 10" Ibeams and I need to weld cross members between them using cold rolled steel 1/4" wall tube. I have used my grinder and cleaned up the galvanization around the area where I will be running a bead but when I attempt to weld this, the area on the Ibeams splatters, pops out the weld and gums up my tig rod.Is the galvanization deep in the steel and I just haven't ground down deep enough or am I trying to do something that can't be done?
Reply:The galvanic coating is only on the surface, it doesn't penetrate deeply into the metal. What amperage, filler metal, tungsten size, tip angle and filler metal are you using? Is there a reason that you're not using GMAW?I r 2 a perfessional

Reply:I think milk is the remedy for galvanize poisoning. I forget what the symtoms are I think sweats or hot flashes or something menopuase like! LOL
Reply:zinc poisoning is somewhat like a reall bad flu, have a glass of milk and you will be out of bed in a jiffy.or better yet, dont get sick at all. Wear a respiarator (not a dust mask) and grind the stuff off as best as possible before you weld it.
Reply:You haven't ground down enough to get thru the galvanizing yet. I would suggest stick welding as mentioned above. I've tried tigging hot dipped galvanized fittings in the past, and never had much luck. I never could get them clean enough not to cause a problem.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:If you do want to grind, use a non-ferrous grinding wheel (such as for aluminum), it won't load up and clog so bad .....
