Nato storage battery welding

A friend tells me that some Nato vehicles have welding kits that work off the vehicles 24 volt storage batteries.  Since these batteries probably provide at least 500 amps at 24 volts, it would seem like there would be excessive amperage.Would such an emergency arrangement work with regular welding rods or would special rods be needed?Thanks,Archer

Reply:The system has a tap on it just like a buzz box, so you don't get the full current, just what you tap.  Regular rods work.  Similar systems are available all over the country at your local swap meet or craft fairs that run off 12 volt truck batteries.  Some of the ones offered as swap meets don't make too bad of a weld.  I would imaging the NATO ones are much better designed.I r 2 a perfessional

Reply:I can't comment on the particulars of NATO vehicles, but I have welded with car batteries. I had some work to do on my wood burning stove and did not feel like dragging it out of the house to get it close enough for my leads/extensions. Its probably 450 lbs. I ran 3 12 volt deep cycle marine batteries in series for 36 volts, and if memory serves, ran 1/8" 7018.  3/32" would have been better. It was a bit cold. I think that you have to be careful to have lots of ventilation because of the possibility of the batteries releasing hydrogen gas. Aside from that, I'd guess that if you have taps, you may find a certain size electrode works better than others after some experimentation.I don't know if there are any other safety concerns, perhaps someone else will chime in.

Reply:series batteries will give double voltage and half the amps,parallel batteries will give same voltage and double the amps,three batteries in series would give a reasonable current
