I am considering buying this Hi Freq box on craigslist. It's listed at $140, and might be an inexpensive way to get into TIG.http://medford.craigslist.org/tls/2844128405.htmlIt says "Hi frequency tig hook to any stick welder and u can weld stainless steel and alumna works good don't need it have a big miller tig now used this one for years with no problem"I have a MIG bottle, but not an Argon bottle. So, I guess I'd have to buy one of those as well. I'd be attaching it to my old Miller Thunderbolt, so the foot pedal is only on/off. I made a thing so I can do DC as well as AC, but it's not a smoothed out wave or whatever. Not sure if the foot pedal would control the power if I had a fancier welder.I'm a self taught welder who does it for a hobby, and I've never TIG'd before. I guess it's kinda hard, but sounds fun. Not exactly sure what to ask. Any comments would be appreciated. Attached ImagesPeregrine FisherCave Junction, Oregon1981 Miller Thunderbolt 225VOxy/AcetyleneSome broken shovels and rakes
Reply:Your old miller thunderbolt will tig weld as is via scratch start and dc- (straight) polarityYou just need a tig torch with a gas valve on it and a bottle of argon with a regulater/flowmeter. That is my prefered method of tig welding steel and stainless steel with my Lincoln idealarc. The high frequency box will allow you to tig weld alominum with ac current. You will not have remove amp control with the high frequency box however. It will be set the current on the machine and go.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720 |
