To be honest I can't weld, but my dad and cousin can. If it's ok I'd like to show a few trailers they built. I helped with what I could, mostly I gothered for them.I can't weld up a 1/4 inch hole to save my life. Attached Images
Reply:This is the first trailer they worked on.This was a total, the original owner forgot he had a trailer behind him when he pulled out in front of truck. The passenger side was bend REALLY BAD so to make it easier they cut what was bend off and replaced it with a new beam (scrap we had up the holler) After the trailer was straightened then welded up. My dad and cousin got to thinking and decided to put a ducktail on the end of the trailer. We used the trailer for a couple years but it's been a while since we last used it. We use this when we need to haul heavy equipment like a bulldozer.
Reply:Chester (my cousin) needed a multipurpose trailer for hay, farm equipment, carhauling, etc so they decided to build one. It's frame is made of thick 2X4 tubing. Behind the rear axle is a place for some ramps they built specifically for this trailer. (Right now they're being used on my dad's trailer for the time being. On it's maiden voyage it trailed great behind our one ton and handled the load Great. Attached Images
Reply:YellowMy dad wanted a tilt trailer for a couple years. This past summer he finally built one. We hauled a 1992 f250 diesel on it a couple weeks ago. Trailed like a dream. One problem we have is that with a load the jack goes down way to fast. Attached Images
Reply:It took my dad awhile to find the right kind of axles he wanted to use on it. Attached Images
Reply:P.S. The red trailer next to the yellow one is a factory trailer. The only thing my dad did to it was add the winch (Yeah guess who's crankboy when we have a dead car that needs loaded ->me<-) He's planning on replacing the fenders this spring when the weather clears up.
Reply:Interesting way to do the tilt trailer with the jack. I'm not sure I'm all that keen on how the design is with the pins posibly taking all the load forces. I guess thats because I've seen way too many things tear off heavy D rings, snap load chains and other sundry things when things start to go bad..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:That is the first of its kind I have seen. The pins appear to only need to keep the front from bouncing upward. Weight generally will hold them down, that is if the design has kept the 60/40 ratio. Nice collection of flatbeds. When will you want to start welding practice then? City of L.A. Reply:You are correct Tanglediver. As for welding practice I suck BIG time at welding. I've tried over the years to learn but I just don't have nak for it. My dad and my cousin can weld mig and stick. In the garage they have an old 1960's Lincoln stick welder (nicknamed the old buzzbox), a chicago mig (junk), and a big 15 year old commerical Lincoln stick welder. (funny story on commerical welder)
Reply:Looks as if the trailers have been in service for some time now so I think all is well..You have been around it for so long so why not start welding?Once you start you can't stop..You have the best chance since they are family and know what they are doing..Go for it!By the way..Whats with the tag on the channel in the first pic?...zap!Last edited by zapster; 02-17-2010 at 06:11 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:The black trailer was a factory built trailer but it was totaled. According to the tag it was 3 months old when we got it One whole side was bend and torn up, the ducktail was missing, and the axles were ripped out from under it. So we used what we could of the original trailer for the title. The ducktail was scrap built from stuff up the holler. EX: The rods that the ramps hook to are axle shafts from a rearend |
