Hinges on a  dumpster.  The customer told me to put them level, so I did and showed him the bubble after I ground off the layers of paint and rust, before I welded them.  My vice grip ground clamp worked great.I had a few other things to weld for him, so I used the LN-22.  This is the first time I welded down on a paying job.  I think I am getting it.  Settings were around 4 (40ipm?)  and 16 or so volts on the ranger 250.  Inductance on 75%.There were probably 6 broken hinges on the dumpster, I had to pick a pace for these or remove one.vertical down is something I learned here.I just went fast and steady, staying ahead of the slag.  I started in the center for the plug welds instead of the outside.  The bottom one came out better.  David Last edited by David R; 06-09-2008 at 06:55 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:That's darn good for a first vert down. Center out is how I plug as well.My Photos on Flickr
Reply:I run fluxcore downhill just like I do 6010 and 6011 most of the time. Pretty hot and pretty fast. I don't care what a welding inspector tells me about the proper way to run them, all three are all position electrodes. Ocassionally uphill is the best. There are more ways than one to skin a cat when welding. Use the way that works best for what you are doing. If working to code, follow the code. All three will deliver an x-ray quality weld downhill and the finish is smoother that way.  I do plug welds opposite than you, weld around the outside, knock the flux out of the center and finish filling it up. I'm not saying it's better than your way, just the way I do it.
Reply:David,The vertical down welds look OK, pretty consistent and even bead and ripples and the tie-in looks OK on the toes.  Why did you choose to do vertical down instead of vertical up?  Because of worries about blowing through the dumpster sheet metal? But those horizontal welds across the top of the hinge plate look like they were done by someone else with vision and rhythm problems, inconsistent bead and missed the edge of the hinge plate two or three times on the top.  What happened? For plug welds, I strike the arc in the middle of the hole and quickly run to the 'edge' so I can watch the arc and puddle fuse into the metal.  I go around and then spiral in to the middle and finish off. Those plug welds look a bit cold and underfilled/concave.  I usually try for a slightly 'proud' button of filler, sort of looking like a rivet head when all done.
Reply:The plug welds in that pic suck.  I usually go from the outside in.  The center is the only place to end up.  Add plenty of filler and it comes out level.  I don't know what I was thinking.  The other hinge I did from the outside in like usual and like the book sez.The dumpster was thin and rusty, I burned through in a few spots with the horizontal welds.  That is why I went down, cause there wasn't much to weld to.  The horizontal welds?  vision and rhythm problems  That would be ME I was standing on a chair I welded for the same customer for the top hinge.  If I get a chance I will take a pic of the inside where I burned through and the plug welds on the bottom hinge. I was there 3 hours, welded a swing, Donald Duck, the dumpster a picnic table and a chair.    Great job for NR211.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I wish I could use hinges like that on the dumpsters I work on. Life would be so much easier. I have to build them all as I can't buy any big enough, lol. One inch pin through 2 inch OD heavy tube or larger. The next two will have 1 1/2" pins, heheh. I use the NR211 on them as well, but not on the hinges. It's 6010 and 7018 all the way on those. I too run down with the NR211 just like I do with 6010/6011. I run it pretty hot and get under it and let the arc force keep the flux blown up above it. Here lately I have been running it all up,but I have been lucky and had the iron to handle it. It looks good to me dude. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
