I know this is an incredibly dumb question but I have to ask it. I haven't been able to find the answer anywhere else.Right now I have the electrode just barely coming out of the cup but I'm not sure that's right.thanks in advance. An odd fellow, but nice enough. I build "interesting" things.
Reply:Its mostly personal preference. If its got gas coverage and you can see what your doin its fine. You will eventually see pics around here of people bending them and hanging them way out to get into real tight spots.Mine is usually about 1/8" out of the cup.Yup

Reply:Thaddeus,The Hobart Instutute for Welding Technology recommends 3 times the electrode diameter as the stickout as a general rule. It's a good place to start.  Once you've been at it a while, you'll be able to feel how far you've got it stuck out, and won't even look at it.  Put the tip of your finger on the end of the cup, and roll it till the tip of the tungsten is pressing against the pad of your finger, get used to where it pokes, and you can do it with your eyes closed.I r 2 a perfessional
Reply:It also depends if you are just using a plain gas diffuser or gas lense because with a gas lense you can go out a lil farther with it. i put mine out prolly 1/4" but have went up to about an inch before to get down into a joint. --Gol'
Reply:Half the diameter of the cup is another answer I've read. I usually use a #8 cup (1/2"), so 1/4" is OK for me.fun4now posted a link on the MIller Site about gas lenses. In that link it said up to an inch! Wow. But there was no mention of the cup size associated.Found it:http://www.millerwelds.com/education...rticle122.html9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Reply:The amount of stick out of the Tungsten will be almost impossible to find in many books. The tungsten should stick out far enough to be usable but not so far that it would not get gas coverage. To me that is about 1/4-3/8 inch. Some say 1/2 the diameter of the cup opening. i think it takes a little experimenting. The tungsten should not turn blue.Probably not prolly.  That one drives me crazy.
Reply:I was having dificulty starting to do vert. up and my tig instructor noticed I just couldn't see the arc well enough. This is what told me to do when I mentioned reading that you should use 1/2 the cup diameter on stick out. He had me extend the tungsten out stupid far and try a few beads, almost 1" with the gas lens. He had me keep extending the stickout until I got porosity. The point was more to show me how far I could extend the tungsten if required more so than that I should weld with it that far out. The big thing was to get it out so I could see the arc and not be worried that it might be too far out. With the standard cup you can't go out as far, but you can try the same thing and see how far out you could go if you really had to.
Reply:I was told cup size is the max and flush is the min.  But I personally would go with 1/2 the cup size is a good rule of thumb..
Reply:Its pretty much what ever works for the job.  I stick it out further for a fillet.  I  have gas lenses, but don't use them much.  I don't seem to get better gas coverage and the cup is bigger.  I start with the line from it being sharpened flush with the cup.  this part is sticking out.  < |    This is the cup.I use one size  tungsten bigger than needed because I can see it better.  It helps.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Carmen,I find that with the gas lens, you can go with a significantly higher gas flow rate.  Because of the laminar flow characteristics of the lens, you don't tend to swirl in atmosphere, and this higher flowrate gives better coverage when you need to do a long stickout.I r 2 a perfessional
