Just passed an X-ray test at work, using the Pipepro, short arc root pulse fill and cap, anyways I'm trying to figure out wirespeed in relation to the trim and distance of stick out, been doing 4 & 6 inch sch 40 pipe
Reply:Right now my approx settings are 250/63 315/65 225/58.... I'm sure there's more settings to adjust but as of right now not sure
Reply:What gas, filler metal(type and diameter), joint bevel, land, root opening?  Rolled pipe or out of position?  From the numbers you listed, I'm guessing you're rolling the pipe for these welds.I ask because when I've used RMD and Pro-Pulse on a PipePro, I usually leave the trim about 50.  With 0.045" solid wire RMD wire feed speed about 140-160, depending on where I'm welding on the pipe and the joint fitup.  I like 1/16" land and 1/8" root opening. Most of what I've welded is fixed position 5G.  If you're using 0.035" solid wire, add about 25% to the wire feed speeds I mentioned for 0.045".For pro pulse, I've run wire feed speeds 160-200 for 0.045", depending on the pipe size, thickness, and whether or not the joint is rolled.  Again 0.035" wire will run higher WFS.  Trim settings 50-55.Stickout for me runs about 1/2" to 5/8", but both RMD and Pro-pulse are pretty tolerant of changes in stickout. That's about it for settings.  With Pro Pulse if you hold in the arc control button on the power supply front panel you'll get an 'arc' setting on the machine.  It ranges from 0-50, with 25 as the default setting.  Adjusting this setting will let you widen or narrow the cone of the arc in Pro Pulse.  This can help prevent undercutting the bevel on early fill passes.  At least that's what I've used it for.  It s a sensitive control, so moveing +/-2 points from 25 can make a big change in the arc.Last edited by A_DAB_will_do; 02-24-2012 at 09:19 AM.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:Yeah, all roll outs, except tol's and saddles.... I'll check the wire/gas but we run 1/8th gap on pipe up to 6" and 5/32 on the rest, the lands are all over the board (first year apprentices lol), But .035 wire on short arc,  havnt messed with the rmd yet, but .045 on pulse, production welds on 4" I've been doing short arc root and 1 pulse pass for the fill/cap 230/65 was working pretty good today...... I'm trying to talk my boss into a water cooler, or bigger sized tips, getting tired of changing tips
Reply:What does widening the cone do in relation to the puddle,,,,,
Reply:Making the cone of the arc wider spreads the heat out some, making for a larger, flatter puddle, I think.  It reduces the amount of weave you need to use to get the puddle to fill the width of a joint. A wider arc can also undercut the sides of the joint if you don't let the puddle fill up.I sometimes will adjust the arc control for a tighter, narrower cone for the first fill pass.  This can make it easier to avoid undercutting the bevel or getting cold lap.  But it all depends on the diameter and schedule of the pipe, the amount of pre-heat, travel speed, uphill or downhill, etc. Originally Posted by Fishinsin stationWhat does widening the cone do in relation to the puddle,,,,,
