I just had my second week of night school welding and could use some outside opinions on my classroom stick welds.first two were 3/32 6011 DCEP at 95 amps on 3/16" coupons cant show the good without the bad and ugly right  7024 and 7018 i cant remember which is which sideRealgear 140 MIGMore DeWalt tools that I prolly needDIY 160 amp 40 OCV MOT Stick Welder
Reply:If it's allowed, try playing with the heat setting.Excessive spatter indicates too many amps.  Try the 3/32 6011 starting at around 65amps and work your way up."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:On that last pic...I think you need to keep a shorter arc length, also what were the amps?  Im talking mainly about the bottom side that needs to most work..
Reply:Turn your amps way down for that 6011,  I run 1/8" around 90.  Try running the 7024 on AC, you'll be amazed at how smooth it runs.  Dont forget, its for flat and horizontal only, dont try to run vertical with it.  As for the 7018, for 1/8" I like to run 110-140 depending on the position.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:try learning on thinner material..........like 16 ga.it'll teach you alot more about what you are doing right and wrong.  thicker material is much more forgiving and you don't learn as much. When I took classes, we frustrated ourselves with 6013 rods on 16 ga steel coupons.  at the end of the semester, the instructor gave us some 1/4 plate and 7018 rods........  it was so easy after learning on the thin stuff with 6013.
Reply:Try turning your amps down, and keep the arc length a bit shorter, I couldn't tell you what amps you should use because my welders would have different setting seeing as I am in Australia lmao, but it should sound a bit like bacon frying.. Good luck fella
Reply:For 7018 in a flat position on 1/4" and up I would recommend something around 120-130 amps reverse polarity (electrode positive).  Once you figure out the sweet spot for your heat and get your travel speed down pat, the slag should chip off very easily.  Sometimes it just cracks and a little flick with the hammer and it pops off like nothing.  Or if your really tuned in, the slag will lift itself off the weld as it cools and come off all as one piece.Hope that helps.-Dave
Reply:Like said above for the 7018 try running between 120-130. I use a Lincoln PT 225 and in the flat I am pretty comfortable with about 120-122 on 3/8" plate. Also looks like you have a bit of an angle problem as well, the bead seems to be more on the top than anything. Close you arc gap, keep your drag angle at about 15 degrees, and travel angle around 70 degrees for a single pass. For the 6011, again a good starting point is about 65 and work up. It seems like you are rushing a little, the spacing is pretty far apart. When you come back into the weld start in the middle of the previous puddle, if that makes sense. That will make your bead more uniform. Just starting out, I would not run the 6011 on AC like said above, it runs nice but it's a pain to restart. Good luck
