Im in my mid 20s and graduate welding school this week.  After burning rods and grinding for 12 hours a day, needless to say my back hurts. I know its only going to get worse with age.  So how do all of you old-timers rehab after work? Im sure youll say tylenol, couple of beers, a doobie (for you self employed folks), etc.  I try to get my girl to give me a back massage every night, but I feel bad asking her and not having the energy sometimes to return the favor.  I plan on visiting the chiropractor after I start working and get insurance, but have you guys found any long term solutions?Read my welding blog:http://weldeveryday.wordpress.com/

Reply:I'm 62 and still hitting it hard every day. I usually work in my garden or go kayaking when I get home. Never had a back problem.
Reply:Stretch when you get up in the morning for 15-20 minutes, when you sleep, sleep on your back...... Im also in my mid 20s and i have some serious back issue and have blown my back out twice. so i hear ya bud
Reply:A nice soak in the hot tub works wonders!
Reply:Pelvic tilts help strengthen your back.  Also when standing try to do the bar rail thing resting one foot on something six inches higher.  It pulls your back straight.
Reply:Maybe need to work on technique/position or adjust height on whatever your doing. Too young to be in that much pain.
Reply:after a while you will build up a tolerance,  at least thats what happened in my case.  I will say with this downturn and the slow economy,  i have lost my fitness some.   When a big day comes around i feel it the next day, nothing to do but a couple of Advil and soldier through.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Im 40+ years old and my back is ruined!  I weld, own a business and fly helicopters for a living.  One of the above skills have DESTROYED my back, while the other two keep my back at a constant pain level because it just can't heal properly.  I'm getting close to being a candidate for back surgury.  Core exercises to strengthen my back don't work for sheet most of the time.  So, many cocktails later, cigars, back rubs from the wife, doctor visits, physical therapy, exercise..... it continues to be an absolute burden and sometimes a handicap.  Some have told me that it's called, "pain management.'  However, I find that when the pain is extremely unmanageable, I revert back to "core" exercises and alcohol.  LOTS AND LOTS OF ALCOHOL!    (AA is for quiters!)  Oh, "deep tissue massage" seems to work the best for me to ease the long term pain.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:Stretch your legs & back every day.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:The best long term solution is PREVENTION. Invest in a back support and start wearing it every day.ALWAYS ask for help when lifting anything over 50 lbs. Doesn't matter how busy they look, ask for help. If you feel pain when lifting anything, ask for help no matter how "not heavy" it is.If you feel pain bending over, don't.Your back pain will not likely get better. Take appropriate safety measures NOW before you injure yourself more.Last edited by Joshfromsaltlake; 03-01-2012 at 06:59 AM.
