Total newbie question here, but what benefits does an add-on pulse control unit for a machine like the Miller 180SD give you?Is it something you'd use solely with Aluminum or stainless too? This will be my first TIG machine. I'm self-taught on MIG and can lay down a pretty awesome bead if I do say so myself!
Reply:It will make it look like you can TIG weld BUT in fact you cannot.Of coarse that is after you learn to use it.The pulse was mainly developed for automated welding positioner set ups.Keeps the heat from building up.I would just learn to TIG weld very well.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:Pulse can be used on any material- a lot of people seem to use it as a 'crutch' but set up properly it can lower heat input and allow higher travel speeds. It's most useful on thin materials (under around 1mm/0.040") especially heat sensitive materials like stainlessIt WON'T help you while learning IMO
Reply:Pulse puts LESS AVERAGE heat into the piece you are welding.   I suggest you learn with out it.  Then learn what it does for you and your welds.  You will be a better weldor if you learn to tig with out it.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Pulse was used for out of position, for deposition and heat input, instead of short arc or spray.  JGSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:It's an awfully expensive toy that you don't really just have to have though it does have it's uses. The only Miller pulse unit I have looked into is for mig on an xmt304. It lists for about 1300 bucks. After all these years of non-pulsed mig I'm not sure it is worth it. I am sure there are places where it would be real handy to have on a tig especially on thin stuff, but I have always managed without it.I worked in a shop that had pulsed mig and nobody even knew how to set it up or use it (the tig machine was likely older than me and didn't have it). I finally got it to work on my last day there, lol. It is nice to have on the thin stuff. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:Of all the bells and whistles on my TA-185, pulse is the one I could do with out.  The last tig machine I wanted I ordered the one one with out pulse because of the price difference ($300) and I already have one machine with it that I don't use.  IT IS good for vertical up and overhead. My tig welding skills improved 1,000% since I started hanging around here.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
